Super Falconets, the team that represented Nigeria at the ongoing FIFA Under 20(U20) Women’s World Cup crashed out of the 2022, Under 20 Women’s World Cup, after they won all three group C matches and earned a total of 9 points, their outstanding performance was short-lived when the Netherlands best them 2-0 in the quarter-final stage. It was disappointing for them as they left the finals defeated.
They left the hotel where they stayed in Costa Rica at 6:30 am local time on Monday, 22 August 2022, and headed to Istanbul through Columbia for their flight to Abuja.
Unfortunately, the original airline booked by FiFA transferred them to Turkish Air, which led to some hitches, including delays in Colombia and they eventually missed their flight.
The Falconets got stuck at the Istanbul airport, because they didn’t have transit visas.
Their officials pleaded for transit visas in order to take the girls to a hotel, but they were informed that Nigeria has been removed from the list of countries whose citizens are granted visa-on-arrival in turkey.
Hence, they were not permitted to step out of the airport. This eventually led the girls to sleep on the floor and chairs of the airport for 24 hours, although it was the airline that took them to a sleeping region and gave them tickets to have meals every 5 hours.
The girls are home now but the ugly situation seems to have taken the internet.
Who is to be blamed for the mishap?
Do you think this happened because of the negligence of the NFF?
