The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) verified the issuance of final letters of award to MTN and Mafab Communications for Fifth Generation (5G) Spectrum Licences.
According to the terms and conditions of the 5G licences, MTN and Mafab Communications are expected to commence the rollout of 5G services, actively from August 24.
In line with the licence, MTN Nigeria Communication Plc, one of the winners of the 3.5gigahertz(GHz) spectrum auction conducted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), on Monday, 13th December 2021, MTN began testing the next generation network and has revealed its plans to launch 5G services in Lagos, Abuja, Kano. Port Harcourt, Owerri and Maiduguri.
They began the roll-out by turning on the network in 190 locations across the country.
MTN plans to expand the number of 5G sites it operates to 600 by October.
MTN Nigeria, chief marketing officer, Adia Sowho in her speech relayed the importance of the 5G network. She said it has the capacity to change everything and “allow us to connect, create, collaborate and compete in ways we’ve not even begun to imagine”
The 5G network has been promised to aid in downloading and using the Internet faster and efficiently, thereby helping to provide modifications in Entertainment, Education, Economy, Connectivity and Medically.
However, MTN’s rollout doesn’t imply that all MTN customers will be able to access the 5G network now, rather smartphone users with phone makers that transmit the update expected will be able to access the network. Estimations show that Samsung users will be able to use this service in about a month, while iPhone users might have to wait till October to access the 5G service.
Following delays in receiving its UASL and Numbering plan, which wasn’t done until the end of July, Mafab was given a five-month extension by the NCC, according to Mafab’s chairman, Mushabu Bashir.
MTN has been known for their role when it comes to embracing modification and civilization in the Tech world. They started from GSM, 2G, 3G, 4G and Now 5G.
Who knows what their next Innovation will be as they don’t seem to be backing out soon!
