This massive vessel, called the “Maersk Edirne,” made a big impression with its size and brought a lot of attention to Nigeria’s growing importance in global trade. Yesterday in Lagos, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) revealed a significant advancement in trade facilitation as the massive “Maersk Edirne” vessel docked at the Lekki Deep Seaport, breaking new ground for Nigerian waters.
This colossal vessel, measuring an impressive 367 meters in length and 48.2 meters in breadth, carried a monumental Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of 142,131 metric tonnes and a Deadweight Tonnage (DWT) of 147,340 metric tonnes, with a staggering 3,376 total cargo on-board. The navigation of this behemoth was expertly handled by the proficient and well-equipped pilots of the NPA, ensuring the safe arrival of the “Maersk Edirne”.
In a significant validation of Nigeria’s maritime and economic potential, the arrival of the largest container ship to ever grace the country’s shores at the Lekki Deep Seaport has captured the imagination of industry insiders and onlookers. In the wake of this monumental achievement, Koko took the opportunity to express his appreciation for the unwavering support and endorsement provided by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola. Their collaborative efforts have propelled the authority’s initiatives and investments in employee upskilling and equipment renewal, which have seamlessly facilitated the realization of this significant milestone.
Prior to this monumental event, the largest commercial vessels to navigate Nigerian waters were the “MV Stadelhorn” at Onne Port and the “MSC Maureen” at the TinCan Island Port Complexes. The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) affirmed that the arrival of the 367-meter ship at Lekki Deep Seaport signifies a remarkable leap forward for the nation. The NPA also highlighted that this achievement underscores the port’s ability to not only automate operations but also facilitate transhipment, positioning itself to surpass stakeholders’ expectations.
