After months of legal battles and intense debates, the long-awaited conclusion to the prolonged Kano Governorship dispute is finally within reach. The highly anticipated verdict from the esteemed Supreme Court is set to put an end to the confusion and ambiguity surrounding the divisive gubernatorial conflict.
The Supreme Court’s verdict on the Kano state governorship election appeals is eagerly anticipated and will be delivered this Friday.
Following the appeals’ hearings on December 21, the court had reserved judgment. As reported by TheCable, six other judgments are also scheduled for delivery on the same day.
This comes after the Kano state governorship election petition tribunal had previously removed Yusuf as the governor of the state in September.
In a dramatic turn of events, the election tribunal made a groundbreaking decision to discount a staggering 165,663 votes from the 1,019,602 initially recorded for Yusuf.
The tribunal deemed these votes invalid due to the critical omission of required stamping, signing, and dating, as mandated by the electoral laws.
This unprecedented move sent shockwaves through the political landscape, drastically altering the outcome of the contested election.

Subsequently, the tribunal declared Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the victor of the highly contentious vote.
However, this decision did not sit well with the Nigeria National Rescue Movement (NNPP) and its candidate, who vehemently contested the tribunal’s judgment. In an attempt to seek justice and overturn the ruling, the NNPP valiantly challenged the decision at the appellate court, setting the stage for a prolonged legal battle that would further intensify the already charged political atmosphere.
On November 17th, the court of appeal upheld its decision regarding the NNPP candidate, Yusuf, in the governorship seat dispute. However, a certified true copy (CTC) of the judgment surfaced, revealing contradictory rulings and fueling public outrage.
The court attributed the discrepancies to a “clerical error,” but the confusion and doubts lingered, casting a shadow over the entire judicial process. Stakeholders anxiously awaited further developments as the credibility of the legal system came under scrutiny.
In response to the court of appeal’s decision, the NNPP swiftly filed a notice of appeal with the supreme court, aiming to overturn the ruling.

Additionally, the APC took action by submitting a cross-appeal at the apex court, contesting the lower court’s decision not to acknowledge Yusuf’s alleged submission of a forged certificate to INEC.
The media closely followed every twist and turn, further amplifying the significance of this high-stakes legal battle.
With the credibility of the electoral process at stake, the entire nation held its breath, eagerly anticipating the momentous decision of the appellate court that would determine the rightful occupant of the governor’s office.
