President Bola Tinubu has recently issued a directive to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, instructing them to facilitate the sale of crude oil to Dangote Refinery and other upcoming refineries in Naira. This strategic decision aims to support the stability of the pump price of refined fuel and the exchange rate between the dollar and Naira. The Federal Executive Council has endorsed this move, recognizing its significance in the current economic landscape.
To put things into perspective, Dangote Refinery, a major player in the industry, is in need of 15 cargoes of crude oil annually, amounting to a substantial $13.5 billion. In response to this demand, NNPC has pledged to provide four cargoes, showcasing their commitment to meeting the refinery’s requirements.
However, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has recently granted approval for the 450,000 barrels earmarked for domestic consumption to be made available in Naira to Nigerian refineries, with the Dangote refinery being chosen as the initial test case. This decision marks a significant shift in how such transactions are conducted.
The official statement further clarifies that the exchange rate will remain constant throughout the entire duration of this particular transaction, providing stability and predictability for all parties involved. This move is aimed at streamlining the process and reducing uncertainties that often accompany fluctuating exchange rates.
The statement reads, “The exchange rate will be fixed for the duration of this transaction.
“Afreximbank and other settlement banks in Nigeria will facilitate the trade between Dangote and NNPC Limited. The game-changing intervention will eliminate the need for international letters of credit, further saving the country of dollar payments.”
By leveraging local financial institutions, this innovative approach seeks to minimize the reliance on international letters of credit, thereby cutting down on foreign exchange costs and conserving valuable dollar reserves for the country.
