Kemisola Bolarinwa, A Nigerian female who majored in Robotics and Embedded Systems in Engineering, invented a smart bra capable of detecting early-stages breast cancer.

Who is Kemisola Bolarinwa?

Bolarinwa, who holds a bachelor of Engineering in Electrical, Electronics, and Communications Engineering from the University of Ado Ekiti (now Ekiti University) is a woman with 10 plus years of experience in tech skills.

The Engineer has achieved a lot in her lifetime, she is known for innovative and inventory problem-solving skills.

Also, Bolarinwa is the president of the Women in ICT Foundation – a charitable organization dedicated to helping women and young girls start businesses, learn technology, and become leaders in order to address the issue of women’s underrepresentation in leadership roles, policy-making positions, and maths-intensive science and technology professions.

What Caused The Invention Of Smart Bra?

According to Bolarinwa, the invention was born out of her concern and needs to aid breast cancer analysis, after the death of her aunt in 2017, she frequented the hospital to visit her late aunt who was battling breast cancer, And was moved to invent smart bras.

She made the invention known to the world in 2022, by designing the prototype of the smart bra.  She expressed how she felt the pain of women who were diagnosed with breast cancer which further led to the amplification of the invention. 

It is not much of a surprise that her invention is wearable, since she is the Founder and Chief-executive officer of the Nextwear Technologies – The first wearable technology startup in Nigeria. 

She was invested in the research for a whole year and half to create the smart bra invention in 2019.

However, BBC Africa finally recognised her invention.

How Does Smart Bra Work For Breast Cancer?

According to Bolarinwa, the idea is to use Nanotechnology to ensure reduction of an ultrasound machine to a small size where it can be worn.

To shed more light, the smart bra uses an ultrasound system called the Doppler that bounces high-frequency sound waves off the body to detect blood clots, heart defects, and blocked arteries. This works differently from ultrasound machines that use sound waves to generate images of the scanned area. 

However, Bloarinwa expressed a lot of work still need to be put into the smart bra invention before it becomes a success.

Day by Day, Nigerians keep showing they are blessed with talents and innovations. Although, many other inventions has gone down the drain due to lack of finance to find these inventions to success.
