Sacramento, CA – In a city bustling with craft beer enthusiasts, a new player is set to join the esteemed fraternity of breweries. Mattie Groves Brewery, the latest addition to Sacramento’s vibrant brewing scene, is gearing up to make a resounding impression with its innovative approach and commitment to excellence.

Amidst a backdrop of challenges and opportunities within the brewing industry, Mattie Groves Brewery emerges as a beacon of promise, poised to elevate the craft beer experience for local patrons and enthusiasts.
Sacramento, California, is now home to the much-anticipated Mattie Groves Brewery, located in the lively midtown area. The brewery is the realization of a dream for its passionate co-owners, who are excited to bring their vision to life.

In January 2024, the Mattie Groves Brewery opened its doors on L Street, marking a new beginning for the renowned Big Stump Brewing Co. The founders, Matthew and Katie Cooper, with their years of experience and unwavering dedication, were eager to share their craft with the world.
The opening was a celebration of their passion and the flourishing legacy of the brewing industry.
“As soon as we got our ABC license, it was all go. How much bee your can we brew, how fast can we get it out for our opening,” Matthew said.
Katie’s plan was to infuse a traditional pub with creative beer offerings, all while nurturing a strong sense of community. Her vision resonated with anticipation and inclusivity.

“We really wanted to sort of bring back to that sort of foundational basis of bringing people together,” Katie said.
Katie and Matthew are single-handedly running the show. From crafting their own unique brews to personally tending to the guests, Mattie Groves is currently operating without any additional staff.
“This is our family unit in a way. It’s he and I and our dog in this brewery, and this is who we are,” Katie said.
“As we start, we’re keeping overhead as low as possible,” Matthew said. “We’re trying to keep costs low.”
As Mattie Groves opens, some craft breweries, bars, and restaurants in the Sacramento area are facing difficulties in the aftermath of the pandemic.
The owner of High Water Brewing announced the closure due to high prices.
The President of the Sacramento Area Brewers Guild, Ryan Campagna, confirmed that High Water closed at the end of 2023. Campagna noted that the current situation is altered from pre-COVID-19 times, but it is not dire.
“I believe we were somewhere in the high 70s in terms of number of brewery members in the region, and we’re right around 80 right now. So, I think Sacramento, while we’re not seeing the growth we were used to for so many years, we’re at least not shrinking back,” Campagna said.
The Brewers Association reported that total beer production in the U.S. decreased by over 3% in 2022, while craft beer production remained relatively steady.
Despite this, Campagna expressed optimism for the future, and this sentiment is shared by Mattie Groves Brewery.
“We’ve only been open for a week now, but we’re already starting to see the same faces come in,” Matthew said.
With its early success, Mattie Groves Brewery is poised to make a significant impact and create a lasting legacy in the local craft beer landscape. Mattie Groves Brewery stands as a beacon of promise, ready to make its mark and contribute to the enduring legacy of craft beer in Sacramento.80
