Before we talk about CV optimization.

I considered it best to talk about words

Because a CV is a document that has words written all over it. So words are what make the CV special.

So if you try to introduce yourself to someone for the first time.

The person has a blank sheet about you in his mind. You must be the one to say how you want your employer to perceive you

So the person you’re talking to for the first time will pay attention to YOUR CHOICE OF WORDS to get a perfect illustration of who you really are

I can tell you “my name is Ejimi, I’m a forex trade investor, I trade for people too, I’ve been trading for 12 years now”

Now this might be true

But I can also say

“My name is Ejimi, I’m a profitable investor
With 12 years experience, I help people make money so that they can pay attention to what matters most to them with people that matter most to them”

Now I’ve used my choice of words to bring life to my illustration and deepen my touch with whosever I’m communicating with

Let’s look at the difference between *CV, RESUME , COVER LETTER*

*CV* This means “curriculum vitae” which is translated the curriculum of Life.

CV is more detailed, it is the general detail of your life.
Your publications, achievement, awards, skills, experience.

*RESUME* this means “Summary”

This is a “tailor made” CV. Targeted at a Job, showing only what is related to the Job that you are seeking for

It contains details, information about you, skills and work experience in line with a particular Job.

*COVER LETTER*
This is a letter showing your communication skill to your employer to be.

It accompanies the CV or RESUME sometimes written on the body of an email

Now before you create a CV

It’s best to first discover your career path or paths.

Stalk those who have achieved your career plan and study their progress on *LinkedIn*

Look at about five of them,

What did they start as, how did they progress to where they are.

So let’s say, a CEO started from

✓Assistant project manager
✓Project manager
✓Project supervisor
✓Head of Project team etc

Now I want to bring to your notice that a human resource person does not read your CV for more than 8 seconds.

They scan through, because there are alot of other CVs to scan.

But these days, companies used ATS

*ATS is Applicant Tracking Software*

A software that checks for certain keywords in your CV,

So when a Job description is looking for 2 years experience.the ATS checks for 2 in your CV, if there is no 2 it might not be picked, Also it is great to note that the higher the repetitions of these keywords, the higher your chances of scaling through the ATS

A CV should contain

🔥Name

🔥 personal profile (details)

🔥 Summary

🔥Skill

🔥 Experience

🔥 Education

🔥 certification

No reference,

no pictures,

no marital status (except indicated by the company)

Now let’s look at profile making in the CV

There is what we call an *Elevator pitch*

Selling yourself for about 60 seconds.

Now that is how your profile should be.

Your elevator pitch should show

*Your Name*
*What you do*
*Who you do it for*
*How long you’ve done it*
*What people benefit from what you do*

So a profile can go like this

*My name is Ejimi, graduate of business management, an Aspiring Project management, with 2 years internship experience at Melson projects consults, skilled at database management, critical thinking, software designing, proficient with Microsoft office suite and project management softwares*

Remember how I said you should discover your career path right.

The benefit of discovering your path early is to know the required skills related to that Job you’re seeking

And look for how you can learn them. If you can pay please pay to learn soft skills.

About years of experience,

Your IT is an experience.
Your NYSC is an experience if you worked with a firm.

You can choose to volunteer while you are still a student so that when you are done with school
You’re already armed with years of experience in your belt..

Lastly it’s best to have a consistent story in your CV, like from a project manager, we want to see you progress to a higher management role not from project manager to customer service manager and then to logistics manager, it doesn’t look like there’s that harmony…
