Good to Great | Everybody has a brain

There is this saying that “Excellence is a by-product of successive habits” this is true and worthy of acceptance that we become our most consistent habits, when you improve 1% of your life every day, you’ll become so much better within some months.

You’ll never know how powerful a habit is until when it is done consistently, it’s like an aircraft taking a degree off the normal established degree after an hour that aircraft would find out that it has veered off its destination,. This is why the control tower and lighthouse has a lot of responsibility on their hands.

A habit is any routine or behaviour that is performed regularly, according to the the “Atomic habits” every habit takes these four stages.

  1. Cue
  2. Craving
  3. Response
  4. Reward

I’ll give a scenario, let’s say one is addicted to drinking alcohol, your cue (that which initiates the craving) could be when you are with your friends or in a bar, then the craving for the alcoholic drink starts, which leads to a response (you buy the drink), then the reward is getting high or intoxicated.

Since excellence is a product of our habits, then to become excellent we must have certain habits, and these habits can be built under strategic environments and plan.

An environment that has a lot of waste bins would rarely have refuse on the floor, it would encourage proper dumping of refuse, also an environment that has Alot of drinking taps will encourage people to drink water regularly, A Hostel that has a shower with constant water supply would encourage regularly bathing.

Knowing this is very helpful, especially if you want to build good habits

How To Create Good Habits

  1. You have to be Inspired, find someone who already has that habit to inspire you and show you hows it’s done, stay close to them so that the behaviour rubs off on you, or at least you get to see how they behave that way.
  2. Be Committed, being Inspired isn’t going to make you have the habit but it’s a step, commitment will. A winner and loser, a rich person and a poor person all want the same results but it is the commitment to the process that determines the progress.
  3. Have the right mindset, “Know your why” Why do you want this habit?
Scriptures put it this way “He that runs, runs to obtain the prize” some people go as far as putting pictures of the prize on places where they can see it constantly.
The more pride you have in this identify, the more motivated you are to maintain it.
  4. Because Habits need to persist long enough to break through, you need a system to keep it going. You have to make the cue obvious. Let’s say you want to make reading a habit, keep the books where they can be easily seen and reached, keep it close to your pillow, or coffee mug, that way the cue is obvious and the response would be easier, choose a particular time to make it a routine.
  5. Lastly, Get an accountability partner, there has to be someone you can report to and measure your success, celebrate your little wins and sometimes you will miss a day or two, don’t let it bother you. It might not be someone, it can also be a checklist, calendar or to do list.

Try not to make the habit cumbersome or overwhelming, start with what you know you can confidently do, do not take on a plan that you can’t handle.
