HOW TO ANSWER THE SALARY QUESTION DURING AN INTERVIEW
Have you ever been in an interview and you’re asked, What are your salary expectations? How much do you expect to get paid?
Have you ever wondered how to answer them but you didn’t know how? Well I’m here to teach you how best to.
Firstly, before you are being asked that question, I must tell you that the company already has a salary range for you, most times it’s a trick to get you to pick s lower range so that they can bargain on.
So if your company is already has a range, you should also arm yourself with a range as well. However there are many factors to consider when putting a range.
You have to know what the role is officially, because it’s easier to get to find out what amount of money is given to those with similar roles or find an employee through LinkedIn and ask them before coming for the interview, this would help save you a lot of stress.
Factors to consider before setting a price range are.
✓ Experience: do you have the relevant experience to get the job done, skills do matter but experience means you have practiced those skills over time and you have a track record of diligence under your belt.
The higher your experience, the higher your bargaining power over your employer.
✓ Skill: just like I earlier mentioned, skill is different from experience, do you have the necessary skill to carry out that function or role, have you been trained for it? Cause it takes the right skills to get the job done, a wiseman once said, it’s not enough to be at right place at the right time, you’ve got to be the right person (skilled for that opportunity) so do yourself a favor by brushing up and learning the skills that is required for your dream job while hunt for it.
✓ Competition: it is a common principle that where there is high demand, prices go up, when there is a low demand, prices go low.
Is that Job role highly sought? A teaching Job and a neurologist payroll is different because it’s easier to find a replacement teacher than a replacement neurologist.
Competition can also be seen in the high number of job applicants for the same role as well.
✓ Standard of living in the area:
Most people are without Jobs not because they aren’t qualified but because of the expenses incurred while working might outweigh the money earned… Some deem it not nice because the average worker works to foot his bills and have something to spare but when bargaining a salary range, please check the cost of living in that area so that you won’t spend much more than the salary earned.
✓Working Condition: a good working condition is also worth the salary, most companies might not pay you so much but then there could be a free accommodation, a HMO attached, an allowance for their wardrobe, transportation sometimes the company might have a bus pick up joint where they could come pick up their staff and employees. Then the salary would work in this regard.
✓ Career goals inclined: have you ever seen people who are interns working for no pay? Yea it’s not because they are daft, it’s because they know what they are aiming at or they have a goal, it is goals that make people throw away Lucrative deals, it was a goal that made Daniel deny the King’s meal and honour for interpreting the handwriting on the wall.
One who has a goal and vision is hardly distracted, it may tarry but at its appointed time, it shall speak.
If the salary is small but good enough after you just have compared it with the value you would learn, the networking you’ll get as well as the experience you will garner then you might just take the Job
Sometimes, after considering all these factors, the company says they like you but your salary expectations are too much for them, then you can negotiate with any of these two deals.
✓ working condition as stated before, ask for an accommodation, or a place closer to work so that expenses from your end would be reduced, or an HMO which really isn’t that much, or certain benefits like a leave or a period for personal development or a fee to s training that would help you become more valuable to their company.
✓ you can agree to work on their terms with a probation period when the salary would be looked upon having seen the skills and the development you have brought about but then this approach is for those who are very confident about the value that they are bringing to the table.
I hope you found value?
