Vanessa Memeh, a grade 12 student at Cathedral high school in Hamilton is making history after becoming one of 36 teens nationwide to receive the largest scholarship award in the country.

Memeh seizes every opportunity in her path, whether in the classroom or involved with the student body and her commitment resulted in landing the Loran Award, the largest scholarship in Canada.

Memeh says, “it is my goal to utilize everything Loran is giving me and make a positive impact in my world.” She says since moving to Canada from Nigeria back in 2018, she’s blossomed from a grade nine introvert to a senior leader, holding roles on student council and committees on anti-racism, inclusion, and school spirit.

The Loran Scholars Foundation says out of nearly 5,000 applicants in Canada, and an extensive selection process she’ll be receiving $100,000 worth of tuition, living expenses, mentorship, and summer work at one of 25 universities. All are based on assessments of character, community work, and leadership skills.

Memeh is the first graduate of Cathedral high school to receive the award. With just weeks away from graduation, Memeh says she wants to make a difference in healthcare and is in the process of choosing her next school in either Ottawa or London, Ontario.
