Marco Cavaleri, the EMA head of vaccines told Italy’s ll Messaggero newspaper that “it is clear there is a link with the vaccine. But we still do not know what causes this reaction.”

He added that medical experts are still trying to understand how this happens.

Some European countries including Germany, France and Italy have suspended the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine following reports of blood clotting.

Despite the rising concerns, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the EMA declared that the vaccine should remain in use as the benefits outweighs its risks.

In an interview on Tuesday, Cavaleri said an updated assessment is expected this week which should give a precise detail as more cases of blood clots in the brain among young people have been recorded.
