DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ACADEMIC CV AND AN INDUSTRY/CAREER CV
A CV is a short form for the document called curriculum vitae, a document that explains or summarises the life of an individual.
This is required by either your hiring manager and your academic institution.
However people are not particular about the difference between the academic CV and an industry CV.
The differences include
1. Length.
An industry CV should range from 1-2 pages long while an academic CV can be as long as required.
One of the reasons why an industry CV is short is to help the recruiter or hiring manager to choose you faster out of the dozens of applicants, your CV is to help the recruiter know that you’re the right person not stress them.
But an academic CV has to have more comprehensive details about your work, history, education, research and publications.
2. The details
The Industry CV should be tailored made for the position you’re applying for and should be relevant in that industry.
One should highlight the skills, professional summary, career and experience.
But an Academic CV is a more complete detailed document used by PhD students and graduates seeking teaching positions, it should include all of your experience even of it doesn’t pertain to the position you are seeking.
Details like research, publications, internship, volunteer, community development services, speaking engagements, awards, Honor’s, professional associations.
However most of these elements can come in the industry CV especially when they are relevant to the job you as seeking and should be concise as possible.
3. Purpose
The purpose of the industry CV is to get you a job, position in an organisation while the purpose of the academic CV is to secure an admission with a tertiary institution.
4. Lastly
The industry CV is accompanied with a cover letter while the academic CV is most times accompanied with a personal statement or statement of purpose.
