The Academic Staff Union(ASUU) awarded scholarships to 12 undergraduates of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Akoka, to support poor students in their studies.

On Tuesday 21st November 2023, ASUU Chairman of the branch Professor Kayode Adebayo announced this through a statement given to Nigerian Tribune.

He brought to notice that ASUU Nationals always set aside a date on the 12th of November of every year to honour and revere ASUU members who have contributed immensely to the growth and success of the union. The chairman also added that the Union used that opportunity to award a scholarship to two(2) less privileged students to support their studies.

Previously, ASUU Unilag resolved to award scholarships to 10 students at its concluded congress on October 13th 2023.

More so, ASUU decided to bring its resolution to support 10 indigent students to fulfill this year’s edition of ASUU’s Heroes Day which was held at Kaduna State University.

Therefore, a total of 12 less privileged students were awarded scholarships this year by the union. The first 2 student scholarships were from the yearly directive from the national body of ASUU to reduce the financial responsibility of indigent students, while the 10-student scholarship was birthed at the Congress, making it a total of 12 scholarships.

Furthermore, Prof Adebayo noted that the beneficiaries of the scholarships are all intelligent undergraduates, including disabled students who are pursuing different careers in the institution.

Importantly, he made it known that the union has determined the beneficiaries of the scholarship solely based on the interviews and applications conducted for them to be certain the awards were going to deserving students.

ASUU chairman Unilag mentioned the recipients of the national scholarship award will get a sum of N200,000 each while the remaining 10 will get the sum of N100,000 each summing up N1.4 million.

Likewise, he announced the awards would be presented to the students on Thursday 23rd of November 2023.

Today, the cheques were given to the awardees at the Ladoke Akintola University, by the former National Treasurer of ASUU Prof Ademola Aremu; Financial Secretary of ASUU, Professor Ade Adejumo and the chairperson from the zone.

ASUU’s Ibadan Zonal Coordinator, Professor Oyebamiji Oyegoke, announced the prizes and said that all union chapters were instructed to establish the scholarship program to guarantee that talented but impoverished students would not be denied access to a top-notch education.

He claims that at least 73 students at all public universities receive scholarships worth N100,000 per session from the union’s national secretariat and that specific varsities also provide scholarships to their impoverished pupils.

During the event, the financial secretary of ASUU Professor Ade Adejumo, pleaded with Nigerians, including

“those who have stolen from Nigeria and Nigerians to assist impoverished students’ education so they can reach their full potential and contribute to the country’s growth”

Finally, Professor Ademola Aremu, former national treasurer of the union addressed the audience. He said;

“It is a pity that Nigeria is about the only country that that pay her lecturers very poorly. Nigerian professors after spending 10 years in a professorial cadre earn about $800 the even the Republic of Benin pays around $2,000. Nigerian leaders only want to keep the poor down by denying them quality education to pave way for their children schooling abroad to come and rule them”

In conclusion, the event was successful from the students who received scholarships from the union today to the distinguished professors who addressed Nigeria as a whole.

We are hopeful that Nigeria will become a better country due to the dignitaries who are intentional about education and Nigeria as a country.
