The billionaire’s recent statement has emerged in the midst of a fresh dispute with a crucial equity partner involved in the plant, representing the most recent development in an ongoing conflict with regulatory bodies in Nigeria. 

This conflict has been characterized by a series of challenges and disagreements, showcasing the complexities involved in such high-stakes business ventures. For instance, Dangote’s decision to decrease the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited’s stake in the refinery from 20% to 7.2% due to their failure to meet their financial obligations highlights the importance of financial stability and commitment in such partnerships. 

“Let them (NNPCL) buy me out and run the refinery the best way they can. They have labelled me a monopolist. That’s an incorrect and unfair allegation, but it’s OK. If they buy me out, at least, their so-called monopolist would be out of the way,”

“We have been facing fuel crisis since the 70s. This refinery can help in resolving the problem but it does appear some people are uncomfortable that I am in the picture. So I am ready to let go, let the NNPC buy me out, run the refinery,” Dangote stated.

The highly anticipated $20 billion refinery, inaugurated in January, has been lauded as a groundbreaking entity for Nigeria and the energy sector throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Scheduled for its inaugural distribution of petrol to the Nigerian market in August, the colossal facility has been operating slightly above half of its total capacity. Nigeria, being Africa’s largest oil producer, has been grappling with issues like theft, pipeline vandalism, and low investment in the sector. In a recent development, Nigeria’s Midstream and Downstream sector raised concerns about the sulphur content in Dangote’s gasoil exceeding the required limit of 200 parts per million (ppm). However, Dangote promptly responded, refuting claims that the petroleum products from his refinery are substandard.
