A trial carried out on the vaccine showed it only provides minimal protection against mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms caused by the new variant which was first detected in South Africa and the UK.

“It’s a temporary issue that we have to hold on AstraZeneca until we figure out these issues,” Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told newsmen on Sunday.

Authorities say the 1.5 million AstraZeneca vaccines which will expire in April, will be kept until scientists give clear indications on their use.

Recall that on November 20, 2020, AstraZeneca/Oxford said its COVID-19 vaccine was 90% effective against the COVID-19 disease

South Africa is Africa’s most hit COVID-19 country with 1,476,135 infections and 46,290 deaths.
