Daddy Freeze Criticizes Worship Session at Alexx Ekubo’s Service of Songs
BBN’s Cross Okonkwo weighed in on the ongoing controversy of Daddy freeze with the gospel singer due to late actor Alexx Ekubo.
“Daddy freeze with due respect sometimes keep your mouth shut,. If you don’t know Jesus Christ. Don’t talk. And leave men and women of God out of your mouth
The Service of Songs held in honour of late Nollywood actorAlexx Ekubo has continued to generate conversations on social media after media personality Daddy Freeze expressed reservations about the worship session led by gospel artistes during the event.
The memorial gathering, which took place in Lagos on June 10, 2026, brought together family members, colleagues, celebrities, and close friends who paid tribute to the late actor through prayers, worship, and heartfelt speeches. Gospel ministers led songs of worship as attendees celebrated Alexx Ekubo’s life and legacy.
However, Daddy Freeze took to social media to question the style of the programme, arguing that he did not agree with turning a memorial service into what he described as a worship concert. His remarks immediately triggered mixed reactions from Nigerians, with many defending the organisers while others agreed with his observations.
“ Really what happened to all your miracles, healing, what about your God you posted on your platforms,
Then Mercy Chinwo came and turned the place into a concert. I stood up and left, I was so upset, I said okay let me mind my business.Peterson Okopi, Ebuka Songs and Kaestrings. The musical ministries transformed the gathering into an atmosphere of praise and thanksgiving, leaving many mourners visibly emotional. Do you understand the meaning of funeral?”
“I was mourning I saw his wife who’s now a window, I saw his brother, sisters, the person who spoke on behalf of the family”
“I didn’t want to hear sermon but I can tolerate sermon, you could just sing a hymns,I could have been moved, this is someone you won’t see again”
“then Pastor Nathaniel Bassey came on stage and blew his trumpet, I understand the trumpet in revelation linking it with end of the world, Alex world may his soul rest in peace,”
“Nathaniel said he never met Alex in person that one of his pastors asked him to go and pray for Alex on Monday but he died on Tuesday before their arrival but they still sing and pray for him on his dying bed; I think, that could be an opportunity for you to showcase all the healings, miracles you performed and posted on your platforms?”
Actor Mofe Duncan Fires Back at Daddy Freeze
Reacting to Daddy Freeze’s comments, Nollywood actor Mofe Duncan strongly defended the Service of Songs and those who organised it.
According to him “The night wasn’t about you or anyone else but ALEXX.”
He further explained that the gathering was specifically organised as a night of worship and tributes, stressing that Alexx Ekubo loved worship and that those closest to him considered the atmosphere appropriate for celebrating his life.
Actor Duncan also criticised Daddy Freeze for making the event about himself instead of allowing the family and friends of the deceased to mourn in peace.
Late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo’s Illness and Death
Alexx Ekubo reportedly passed away after a battle with kidney cancer, a development that came as a painful shock to fans and the Nigerian entertainment industry.
Following news of his death, tributes poured in from actors, filmmakers, musicians, and admirers across the country, with many describing him as humble, cheerful, and generous.
His Service of Songs was organised as part of his funeral activities before his final burial in his hometown in Abia State.
The Ekubo family announced the funeral arrangements while thanking Nigerians for their prayers and support during their difficult moment.
Relatives described the late actor as a loving son, brother, and friend whose life touched many people both within and outside the entertainment industry. Family members requested privacy while mourning their loss and encouraged well-wishers to continue praying for them.
Public Reactions Continue Online
Daddy Freeze’s comments have continued to divide public opinion on social media.
Many Nigerians argued that a Service of Songs is traditionally a Christian gathering centred on worship and thanksgiving for the life of the deceased, making the performances by gospel artistes appropriate.
Others maintained that everyone has the right to express personal opinions, even if those views are unpopular.
The discussion has since evolved into a broader conversation about Christian funeral traditions, worship practices, and the role of gospel music during memorial services.
Ultimately, the controversy surrounding Alexx Ekubo’s Service of Songs reflects the differing opinions many Nigerians hold regarding religious expressions at funeral ceremonies. While Daddy Freeze questioned the format of the event, several actors, entertainers, and members of the public defended the organisers, insisting that worship remains an important part of celebrating the life of a believer. Despite the debate, the overwhelming focus of the gathering remained the remembrance and celebration of Alexx Ekubo’s life, legacy, and contributions to Nollywood.
