At least 20 police officers were on Sunday injured during a violent protest against a Government’s Police, Crime, Sentencing and Court Bill that would increase police powers to deal with non-violent demonstrations.

The protest which initially started out peacefully turned violent when hoodlums hijacked the protest hurling projectiles and fireworks at the police as well as burning and destroying vehicles, leaving two officers seriously injured with one suffering broken bones and another with a suspected punctured lung.

Home Secretary Priti Patel described the incident as unacceptable. 

“Thuggery and disorder by a minority will never be tolerated.” Our police officers put themselves in harm’s way to protect us all. My thoughts this evening are with those police officers injured,” She wrote on Twitter. 

Andy Roebuck, chairman of the Avon and Somerset Police Federation, called the hoodlums who attacked police officers and destroyed public property as “animals”.

“Disgusting scenes in Bristol by a mob of animals who are injuring police officers, members of the public and damaging property.”We have officers with suspected broken arms and ribs.”This is so wrong,” he said.

WHAT IS THE POLICE, CRIME, SENTENCING AND COURTS BILL? 

The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill was recently proposed by Home Secretary Priti Patel. The bill which she said would better protect women and children from sexual abuse, end halfway release of convicted offences like rape, as well as better protect and reassure victims of domestic abuse has drawn nationwide criticism for the clause that would give officers in England and Wales more power to impose conditions on non-violent protests, including those deemed to be too noisy or a nuisance.

Those convicted under the proposed legislation could face a fine or jail.
