A young man named Owate Bode killed his mother in Rivers State because she refused to give him N20,000.

The incident occurred on Saturday, May 13, 2023, in the township of Aleto, Eleme LGA of the state.

The man said he had contacted his mother and asked for 20,000 naira to attend a funeral in the community, but had not been able to get the answer he wanted from the woman.

He claimed that his mother only gave him N10,000 after withdrawing N20,000 from “her account”, which he claimed was not enough.

But things got out of hand when the boy grabbed a hoe and hit his mother on the head. The woman’s head was ripped off and fell into a pool of blood. He died instantly.

The suspect was then arrested by community youth and handed over to the police, while the body was dumped at a local morgue.

During cross-examination, Bode, who appeared unapologetic about his mother’s murder, claimed to be mentally unstable.

He said he decided to “break up with his mother” because she refused to give him his money and insulted him. He went on to state that he’s tired of life and wants to die.

Grace Iringe-Koko, a spokeswoman for the State Police Command who confirmed the incident, said the young man was in police custody.
