Presidency Breaks Silence As Tinubu, Wike, Fubara Meet Amid Tense Political Standoff — Video Trends

| Abuja | June 23, 2025

The Nigerian Presidency has finally reacted to the viral video showing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a closed-door meeting with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara — a surprise development that has ignited political discourse across the nation.

The meeting, which reportedly took place in Abuja over the weekend, comes amid heightened tensions between Wike and his political protégé-turned-adversary, Governor Fubara. The once cordial relationship between the two Rivers political heavyweights has deteriorated sharply in recent months, threatening the stability of governance in the oil-rich state.

Reacting to the trending footage, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement issued Monday afternoon, confirmed the meeting and described it as part of President Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to restore political harmony and institutional stability across the federation.

“President Tinubu remains committed to peace and good governance in all 36 states, including Rivers State. The meeting with Minister Wike and Governor Fubara was a continuation of high-level consultations aimed at fostering unity and ensuring that political disagreements do not obstruct the delivery of democratic dividends,” the statement read.

Ngelale declined to give further details of what transpired behind closed doors but insisted that the President is playing a fatherly role in guiding all parties toward reconciliation.

The rift between Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and key political influencer, and his successor, Fubara, reached new heights in late 2024 after accusations emerged that Fubara was dismantling Wike’s political structure. This led to the mass resignation of Wike loyalists from the state cabinet and a legislative crisis that saw the State Assembly split into two factions.

Despite several peace moves brokered last year — including one initially led by President Tinubu himself — the conflict had persisted, with both camps refusing to fully implement agreed terms. The latest meeting, however, is being seen as a renewed effort to find lasting resolution.

The video clip of the trio — Tinubu, Wike, and Fubara — exchanging smiles and appearing in a visibly cordial mood has gone viral on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Instagram. Nigerians across the political spectrum have shared mixed reactions to the footage, with many questioning whether the appearance of unity was genuine or purely for public optics.

Political commentators have suggested that Tinubu’s visible intervention underscores the strategic importance of Rivers State, not just as an economic powerhouse but as a key political battleground ahead of 2027.

Observers believe the rift in Rivers could have far-reaching implications for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), especially given Wike’s controversial alliance with the APC at the federal level. Wike, though officially still in the PDP, has served as a central figure in Tinubu’s government, fueling speculation about a possible party switch or the emergence of a new political alignment ahead of the next general election.

Meanwhile, Governor Fubara has continued to emphasize loyalty to the PDP while strengthening his own political base within the state.

While the details of the meeting remain under wraps, insiders suggest that President Tinubu is pressuring both men to drop hostilities and focus on governance. There are also indications that a formal truce or agreement may be announced in the coming days if both sides can reach consensus.

For now, Nigerians await the next move in what is becoming one of the most closely watched political dramas in the country — with the Presidency clearly signaling its intention to keep Rivers State politically stable as national campaigns begin to take shape ahead of 2027
