Johann Rupert, South Africa’s billionaire and chairman of Richmont, a luxury goods conglomerate has now become African richest person, a position previously occupied by Aliko Dangote the Nigerian Billionaire.
Aliko Dangote, the founder, chairman and CEO of the Dangote group was previously recorded as Africa’s richest man as of 2021, with a net worth of $14 billion dollars.
However, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index latest data recorded Johann Rupert as the Africa’s richest person with his net worth at $14.3 overtaking Aliko Dangote who’s net worth has declined to $13.4 billion dollars making him the 2nd richest person in Africa and the158th richest person worldwide in 2024.
Rupert’s fortune has increased by $1.87 billion up to date while Dangote’s fortune has had a downturn of $1.69 billion.
The decline in Dangote’s wealth is largely attributed to Nigeria’s challenging macroeconomic environment where his company primarily operates.
Since Tinubu’s government assumed office in 2023, the naira has lost its value due to the removal of the partial subsidy to ease currency controls which was intended to attract foreign investments.
Nigeria’s economy has since then suffered an aggressive decline which has affected its citizens. This decline also affected Dangote whose fortune is largely attached to assess denominated in naira.
Dangote group has suffered delays and other industrial problems at its refinery, caused by the steep depreciation of the naira.
Importantly, the Dangote group is not relenting as they have plans in motion to generate $30 billion revenue in 2025, by focusing its influence in the foreign exchange markets.
