How I Lost My First Grandchild To Medical Negligence- Senate President, Akpabio

Senate President, Senator  Godswill Akpabio has  recounted  a tragic incident of medical neglect leading to the death of his grandchild at a Federal Medical Centre   in 2019.

In a heart-rending revelation,Akpabio opened up about a deeply distressing personal experience of medical negligence that resulted in the tragic loss of his first grandchild.

The incident sheds light on the dire consequences of inadequate medical care.

During the scrutiny of Dr Tunji Alausa, a ministerial nominee from Lagos State, Akpabio shared the harrowing account that has left an indelible mark on his family.

He said “Just like every other person here, I have been a victim of medical neglect,” Akpabio stated somberly.

He went on to reveal the heart-wrenching details of the ordeal.

The young child, whose life was cut short, succumbed to severe bleeding while under the care of medical professionals.

“He was placed on a drip that ran into the night. There was no help, no doctor, no nurse, and he bled until he lost over 60 per cent of his blood,” Akpabio recounted, his voice heavy with emotion.

The situation took a dire turn as the child slipped into a coma, and frantic attempts to revive him proved futile.

Akpabio’s anguish was palpable as he narrated how efforts to use a defibrillator to resuscitate the child were met with devastating news.

“They went to go and bring a defibrillator to attempt to revive the heart, but it did not work. I said for how long, they said it stopped working eight years ago,” he disclosed.

Akpabio’s desperate struggle to save his grandchild, involving a futile physical attempt to revive the child’s lifeless body, paints a distressing picture of a healthcare system plagued by neglect and lack of proper equipment.

“I used my hand and struggled with my physician, I could not revive him.

“I had to close his eyes and put him in the mortuary, and then I proceeded to Port Harcourt for our party’s rally,” Akpabio shared, his voice filled with sorrow.

This heart-rending account serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive healthcare reforms and improved medical facilities across the nation.

The loss of a precious life due to medical negligence is a tragedy that no family should endure, and Akpabio’s poignant testimony underscores the critical importance of ensuring that such heartbreaking incidents become a thing of the past.
