Federal Government Makes Tax ID Number (TIN) Mandatory For Bank Account Operations

The Federal Government has formally clarified that possession of a Tax Identification Number (TIN)  is now mandatory for Nigerians operating bank accounts, as part of broader efforts to strengthen tax compliance and improve financial transparency.

The clarification was issued through the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in collaboration with deposit money banks, following widespread public attention and questions surrounding the policy.

According to the government, the move is aimed at expanding Nigeria’s tax base, curbing revenue leakages, and ensuring accountability within the financial system. Officials explained that linking bank accounts to TINs would enable authorities to properly identify taxable income and align Nigeria’s tax administration with international best practices.

A senior government official noted that the policy is not intended to punish citizens but to promote fairness and responsibility in tax payment.

The objective is to ensure that eligible income earners are captured within the tax system while maintaining transparency in financial transactions,” the official stated.

The directive affects individuals, business owners, and corporate entities operating bank accounts in Nigeria. Banks have been instructed to begin engaging customers who do not have TINs and guide them toward compliance within stipulated timelines.

The Federal Government has also warned against illegal charges, stressing that TIN registration remains free and that any individual or group demanding payment is acting outside the law.

While enforcement is expected to be gradual, customers without TINs may face restrictions on certain banking services if they fail to comply within the time frame provided by their banks.

The policy has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians. While some stakeholders have welcomed the move as a step toward improved revenue generation and national development, others have called for increased public sensitization, particularly for citizens in rural areas and those with limited access to digital platforms.

In response, the Federal Government has assured Nigerians that awareness campaigns will continue and that banks have been directed to implement the policy in a manner that minimizes disruption to customers.

The government reiterated its commitment to building a transparent, accountable, and efficient tax system capable of supporting sustainable economic growth.
