Who is Stephanie Grisham?

Stephanie Ann Grisham is an American former White House official. She worked as the 32nd White House press secretary and as White House communications director from July 2019 to April 2020. During Grisham’s time as the White House press secretary, she did not hold any briefings. From 2020 to 2021, Grisham worked as Chief of Staff and Press Secretary for the first lady of the United States, Melanie Trump. Previously she was her Press Secretary from 2017 to 2019 and is now estranged from the Trumps.

Stephanie was a press assistant to Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. Later she became a member of the presidential transition team. Grisham was the first White House press secretary in American history to hold on press conferences, however, she opted for interviews on conservative news as Press Secretary. In 2007, Grisham became the spokeswoman for AAA Arizona, being fired after a year following accusations of cheating on expense reports. She was later fired from the following job at ad agency Mindspace due to plagiarism charges after copying AAA material verbatim into her client’s web page. Grisham served as a spokeswoman for the Arizona Charter Schools Association. There she came across Tom Horne, Arizona’s superintendent of public schools. She served as spokeswoman for Tom Horne from 2011 to 2014 after he was elected Arizona attorney general.

2014 to 2016

Grisham witnessed the 2014 execution of Joseph Wood, however, she controversially said the two-hour ordeal had been ”quite peaceful” despite contrary observations. Grisham served as a spokesperson for the Arizona House of Representatives caucus, following Republican Mark Brnovich’s defeat over Horne in the 2014 GOP primary. She rebuked the Arizona Capitol Times’s press credentials hours following their report about the House speaker, David Gowan. They had reported that he had traveled at state taxpayers’ expense during his campaign for Congress. Gowan rescinded the order after reporters refused to comply.

Stephanie also worked for Mitt Romney‘s 2012 presidential campaign, 2012. She also worked as a press coordinator for Pope Francis’s visit to Philadelphia as an independent contractor in September 2015.

Trump Campaign

Stephanie began working as a press aide to Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign around August 2015. She assisted arrange his campaign stops in Phoenix and around the state and region throughout the primary. The position quickly expanded to consist of his rallies around the U.S. She was on the state payroll until May 2016, after she took an unpaid leave from the Arizona House of Representatives to work on Trump’s campaign. Grisham was named a special adviser for operations and served on Trump’s transition team after his victory. She was paid her $19,000 in state salary over an 8-week period when she served as a member of the Trump transition team by Arizona House speaker David Gowan.

Trump Administration

Following Trump’s January 2017 inauguration, Grisham was named deputy press secretary for Sean Spicer in the West Wing of the White House. First Lady Melania Trump moved over to the East Wing, in March 2017. Grisham was described by various sources who had worked with her previously as being ”Highly competent” and ”self-aware”, some suggested that she enjoyed ”trolling the press.

Following a complaint by Senator Tom Carper, the United States Office of Special Counsel said that Grisham violated the Hatch Act of 1939. She was accused of using her official Twitter account on July 11, 2018, to tweet out Trump’s campaign slogan. Violation of the act is not a crime, however, it is a workplace guideline, and the agency responded by sending Grisham a warning letter.

2019

Stephanie took the place of Sarah Sanders as White House press secretary and White House communications director in July 2019. Her appointment was announced by Melania Trump on Twitter on June 25, 2019. She was listed by the Annual Report to Congress on White House Office Personnel as ”Assistant to the President. And Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications for the First Lady”, with an annual salary of $183, 000.

Along with her deputy Hogan Gidley, she wrote an opinion piece titled, ”The Washington Post’s lost summer”, that was published by the Washington Examiner on September 5, 2019. The authors confirmed that the Post had not reported on various Trump accomplishments that the paper actually did report. She has been hosted twice in 2019 by Fox & Friends, where she defended Trump on various incidents. Stephanie responded to criticism of President Trump by his former chief of staff Gen. John F. Kelly (Ret.), on October 26, 2019. She stated that she worked with John Kelly and that he was totally unequipped to handle the genius of the president.

In William B. Taylor Jr.’s testimony, Grisham mentioned that the impeachment inquiry against Donald Trump, on November 13, 2019, was a ”sham hearing” that is ”not only boring but also a colossal waste of taxpayer time and money. ” Grisham defended President Trump’s implication that former congressman John Dingell was in hell in December 2019.

2020 to 2021

She classified Trump as a ”counter-puncher” who was ”under attack”. She was reported of leaving her position as White House Press Secretary. And effectively returning to the East Wing to work as Melania Trump’s chief of staff on April 7, 2020. Grisham resigned as Melania Trump’s Chief of Staff after the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol. On the evening of January 6, 2021.

Briefing Controversy

Grisham extended to more than a year time in which there were no formal press briefings, no briefings within her whole time as press secretary. Although, she appeared on Fox News, Fox Business Network, One America News Network, and the Sinclair Broadcast Group on many instances at the same time.

Authors Don Winslow and Stephen King pledged to donate $100,000 each to charity. If she held a one-hour briefing answering questions from the White House press corps. Additionally, 13 former White House and military press secretaries from three administrations before Trump published a letter calling for the restoration of press briefings. The press briefing however did not re-start during her tenure.
