Who is Linda Nolan?

Linda Nolan is a well-known Irish professional singer, actress, and television personality. Following moving with her family to Blackpool, at the age of 3 in 1962, Nolan gained popularity as a member of the girl group The Nolans together with her sisters Anne, Denise, Bernie, Maureen, and Coleen in 1974. She then toured with Frank Sinatra in 1975, won the Tokyo Music Festival in 1981, and had 7 UK top 20 hits between 1979 and 1982 as a member of the Nolans.

Soon following exiting the group, Nolan supported Gene Pitney on his 1984 UK tour. She later went on to perform in theatre, comprising an 8-season residency as Maggie May on Blackpool’s Central Pier (1986-93), where she clocked up more than 1,000 performances. This was followed by 2 seasons as Rosie O’Grady on Blackpool’s South Pier (1994-95). Nolan then reunited with the Nolans for the 2009 I’m in the Mood Again album and tour, and in 2014, she participated in the 13th series of Celebrity Big Brother. Linda was a recurring guest panelist on Loose Women in 2018.

Singing career

In 1981, Nolan scored a minor hit alongside her sister Coleen as part of the Young & Moody Band, with ”Don’t Do That” (UK No. 63) which also featured Lemmy from Motorhead and Cozy Powell. In December 1983, she left the Nolans and quickly gained the label ”Naughty Nolan” because of her posing in risque publicity photos.

The Nolans later reunited as a five-piece (Bernie, Anne, Coleen, Linda, and Maureen) for one-off performances of ”I’m in the Mood for Dancing” first for BBC One’s All-Time Greatest Party Songs, hosted by Tess Daly, which aired on December 17, 2005, and again on August 9, 2007, on Loose Women. Four of the sisters (Linda, Bernie, Maureen, and Coleen) later reunited in 2009 for a successful tour of the UK and Ireland. They also launched an album I’m in the Mood Again, which attained No. 22 on the UK Albums Chart.

Musicals

On exiting the group, she went on to play the role of Maggie May at Blackpool’s Central Pier for 8 summer seasons (1986-93) clocking up over 1,000 performances. Nolan starred for 2 seasons in a similar show on Blackpool’s South Pier called Rosie O’Grady’s (1994-95). She then starred as the prison governor in 2 UK tours of Prisoner: Cell Block H- The Musical together with Paul O’Grady from 1996-1997.

From 2000, Nolan starred as Mrs. Johnstone in Blood Brothers for 3 years in the West End and regularly played the role in the UK touring production until 2008. She was the 3rd Nolan sister to play the role, following Bernie and Denise. Maureen Nolan has also since played the role in the West End on the UK tour for several years, earning the sisters a place in the Guinness World Records as the most siblings to play the same role in a musical.

Jim Davidson, who was also a contestant in the house that year has a history with her: in 1995, her husband Brian Hudson was caught red-handed stealing money from comic Frank Carson’s dressing room at the South Pier Theatre Blackpool. This raised the ire of Jim, who was playing up the road at the time, and promptly lost his temper, yelling ”no one steals from my mates” and threatening to punch him. Jim was promptly thrown out of that nightclub. On Day 15, she was reminded by Davidson of his antics, leading to an argument, and she was later evicted on Day 22.

Illness and health condition

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. Nolan underwent a single mastectomy as part of her treatment. She was then given the all-clear for cancer in 2011. In 2007, Nolan was diagnosed with cellulitis and lymphedema in her arm. In 2017, she fell on her hip and was taken to the hospital, where it was discovered a form of incurable secondary breast cancer in her pelvis. She started undergoing regular radiotherapy treatment to make sure that the cancer would not spread but has stated that she would decline chemotherapy if the cancer was found to be terminal, following seeing how Bernie was in pain from her chemotherapy in 2013.

On July 7, 2015, Nolan claimed that she was sexually assaulted by Rolf Harris in 1975, while The Nolans were supporting Harris on a tour of South Africa. She then confirmed on Good Morning Britain that her cancer had now spread to her brain on March 27, 2023. She had confirmed there is a new drug that has been out for one year which is having positive effects on brain cancer and she is open to trying this. Nolan now has to use a wheelchair as her legs cannot support her body.
