WHY MOST COMPANIES ALWAYS ASK FOR EXPERIENCE

There’s this story in the bible that really gets to me and it’s about a powerful ruler who was looking for people to recruit and I took a look at the job requirements

The king told Ashpenaz, the master of his eunuchs, to bring in some of the children of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility

Youths without blemish, well-favored in appearance and skillful in all wisdom, discernment, and understanding, apt in learning knowledge, competent to stand and serve in the king’s palace…

The funny thing is that he wanted to train them for 3 years but he still wouldn’t go for inexperienced students and employees yet up to date we see employers do this and we whine about it.

There are many reasons why companies wouldn’t want to hire an inexperienced employee and we want to talk about some of those reasons.

1. It takes time to train inexperienced employees.

So from the story I had earlier shared, we all saw that though the King wanted experienced persons, he still would train them for 3 years, imagine if he didn’t choose to train experienced people, he would have taken more time to train them on their appearance, skills, the way of royalty etc that might even amount to 5-10 years.

Most employers know that it takes time to show the basics, it takes time to teach an employee punctuality, it takes time to show a newbie work ethics, how to use the computer.

The person training the newbie could have used that time to be more productive, now I’m not saying that no company should hire an inexperienced employee, there are ways to even the odds but I will discuss that on another content.

2. It takes resources to train an inexperienced employee
In economics we say that the opportunity cost is the alternative forgone in order to purchase an item.

An employee who is inexperienced would take up resources used to focus or plough back into the business.

The computer, desk, projector used to train inexperienced employees could have been used to do something else in the company and this is why most companies don’t mind paying someone experienced higher because it would cost them much more to train a newbie.

3. Newbies tend to make mistakes, imagine someone trying to cook for the first time in a restaurant that deals on hygiene.

Imagine a newbie driving a car for the first time.

A doctor carrying out a major operation without supervision.

All these and many more are scenarios where the lives of people are hanging on the line of someone who is experienced.

For a company whose value is excellence and orderliness, inexperienced people are hardly chosen and even if they are, they will have to undergo certain training and mentorship until they prove that they are worthy.

4. Lastly your experience shows the company the kind of tasks that you can handle.

When most hiring managers ask you about a previous time when you had experienced a problem and what you did to overcome it, they are trying to see how your thought pattern works, you know how David wasn’t allowed to go against Goliath but when he recounted his experience in defeating the bear and the lion that stole his father’s lamb, from that encounter King Saul knew that David was qualified, because if a lion could steal what was not yours and you smote it, how much more when it does steal what is yours.

However there are ways to even your chances at getting a job even when you don’t have an experience, I’ll share that soon.

Hope you found value?
