Stock Market Volatility Persists, Records 4th Consecutive Week Downturn
The Nigerian stock market remained volatile last week, marking its fourth consecutive week of decline due to losses in highly capitalized stocks across various sectors.
Analysts attribute this volatility to global economic uncertainties and the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, both of which have continued to weigh on investor sentiment.
A breakdown of last week’s trading activity showed that BUA Cement’s stock price dropped by 10.0%, followed by Transcorp at -7.8% and GTCO at -4.6%. These declines pushed the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) All-Share Index (ASI) down by 0.9% week-on-week (W/W), closing at 104,962.96 points on Friday, compared to 105,955.13 points the previous week. Consequently, the Month-to-Date (MTD) and Year-to-Date (YTD) returns softened to -2.7% and +2.0%, respectively.
Trading activity reflected broader market sentiment, with both volume and value declining by 12.1% W/W and 25.3% W/W, respectively. Similarly, sectoral performance was largely negative, as the Industrial Goods Index fell by 3.4%, the Insurance Index by 2.9%, the Banking Index by 2.6%, and the Oil & Gas Index by 1.1%. The Consumer Goods Index, however, managed a marginal gain of 0.1%.
Looking ahead, analysts at Cordros Research anticipate continued volatility as investors react to a wave of audited earnings reports and dividend announcements expected in the coming week.
Meanwhile, analysts at InvestData Consulting Limited noted that global economic uncertainty and local political developments, particularly in Rivers State, have continued to erode investor confidence. They added that despite rising fixed-income yields, market pullbacks are creating fresh buying opportunities for astute investors and traders looking to position themselves ahead of corporate earnings releases and quarter-end portfolio adjustments by fund managers.
On the market outlook, analysts predict mixed sentiments driven by bargain hunting, profit-taking, and portfolio reshuffling as investors assess Treasury bill auction rates, corporate earnings forecasts, and dividend announcements.
