RETAINING VALUE WHILE WAITING FOR EMPLOYMENT (Being employable)

Let’s explain employment first, when one is earning a living no matter how little the job is by providing services or products to the market place

Whether you’re unemployed, self employed, an employee in a white or blue collar job, into sales or marketing. These values will work for you regardless the work you do.

Value means a lot to many people, people differ with their needs, ideologies, culture and beliefs so their values should differ too, but in this case value means trying to remain relevant for a period.

One of my favorite bible characters is Daniel, he remained valuable in three regimes and was sought whenever there was a problem beyond the wise men of the kingdom, you can also know how valuable you are by checking how many people come to meet you to solve their problems.

Quickly let’s look at the ways value can be retained.

1. Company focus and goals.

Most companies have a lot of goals that makes the employees confused, a company is into alot of things; Housing, Charity, Food production etc

First choose what you want to be focused on, goal focused, market focused, customer focused etc
Let’s say a restaurant is focused on its customer’s hygiene, this determines the cleanliness of the kitchen, how the utensils should be sterilized, how the chefs should appear, the ingredients, food that would be prepared etc
They will retain value because they have a goal and they are focused on achieving it.

Find a company whose vision and mission allies with your values, whose belief system goes in line with what you believe in, if a company upholds customers and you believe so, go for it, these are some of the questions that you need to ask during interviews, you need to know who you’re working for, for a while horrible bosses and toxic working environment trended, some people signed under toxic bosses because they didn’t bother to ask questions to know what they signing into.

2. Art of selling

Every unemployed person or entrepreneur should master the art of selling. Sometimes one can have the right products but nobody knows about it’s wonders.
Two books that changed my perception of selling were
A. Sell like crazy (Sabri suby)
B. Sell or be sold (Grant Cardone)

Every day we all sell things without being aware. We sell ideas, we sell our personalities to get friends, we sell to avoid getting punished, we sell our poetic words to get the love of our lives

Change the mindset of selling a product to seeing yourself offering value to your customers, imagine your customer as a patient, and your product is the cure to that sickness. You must love your product too and believe in it else others won’t

You would need to learn this wherever you find yourself working, every company, firm or business is selling something, it doesn’t even have to be a product or service, it could be value and if that value is worth giving then you need to find a way to make it irresistible to your target audience.

3. Customer service

Money lies with people and if you get their heart you’ll get their treasure.
Mike Murdock said “every good business deal should spring into a relationship”
Have you been able to reach out to your customers and ask about their welfare, send goodwill messages to them, wishes if possible know their birthdays.

I once saw an advert about a soap during the pandemic, telling people to wash their hands to stay safe not just with their soap but any soap at all. This shows empathy that you have their welfare at heart

As an unemployed person, build emotional intelligence before you apply for that Job, this would come in handy and make you employable, we live in a world of men and if you don’t find a way to manage people inspite of their personality differences, temper, mentality, and attitude then you might not be useful to any company at all.

4. Digitalization

Help any business you’re part of to be online, let the business have an online presence and high online visibility, you can learn social media management, and copywriting, content writing,

We have “Google my business”, learn how to create a website, have a social media platform for reaching out to customers, engaging with them, listening to their complaints and giving them first hand information about new products or services or rumors.

Someone close to me was sick, and needed quick medical attention during the lockdown, she reached out to a pharmacy that had online visibility, to get her drugs and delivered to her doorstep.

I learnt about various customer service platforms that are free like tawk while I was working as the head of marketing in my former firm

5. Research

While other business are counting their losses, make research, check how businesses bounce back during economic recession, inflation and depression,
Study patterns, most patterns repeat themselves but you won’t know this unless you research.

Study the generation z (1996-2015)
How do they think, what are their buying habits, where can they be found, study seasons and the product associated with the seasons.
How can you make your products cheaper, are there raw materials that can be sourced within your environment etc

6. Personal development

I heard how Warren Buffet said that he always knew that he was going to be rich, he didn’t sleep on the idea, he read books about every topic that he invested into, some people desire Jobs but they are not willing to develop themselves to become the best fit for those jobs that they desire, would you hire you if you applied for a job in your own company?

Funny question but you’ll be shocked that you won’t hire you so why then do you want someone to hire you?

Here’s a secret I learnt from Seth Godin “focus on how to serve your customers better, you’ll see better ways to”

Hope you found value
