A Nigerian Court ordered the release of Tigran Gambaryan, BinanceBinance head of financial crime compliance after the government dropped money laundering charges so he could seek medical attention outside Nigeria.
Tigran,was detained on February 26th 2024, has been on trial since April for money laundering to the tune of $34.4 million through cryptocurrency.
Tigran’s wife Yuki who has been appealing and fighting for her husband’s release accused the Nigerian Federal Government of playing with her husband’s life in August. She said her husband’s health had deteriorated in prison to the point where “it might leave permanent damage and affect his ability to walk”. She asked for him to be freed and vowed to fight for his release.
The Economic And Financial Crime CommissionThe Economic And Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) In an open court withdrew all their charges against Tigran, who’s also a U.S citizen.
The statement read according to EFCC Lawyer, Ekele Iheanacho;
We have withdrawn the money laundering charges against Tigran Gambaryan to allow him to get medical treatment outside the country,”
The lawyer further explained that Tigran was merely an employee at the company and as such as no personal involvement with the naira manipulation Binance was being investigated for.
He further added that the EFCC will continue their investigation without Tigran Gambaryan.
However, the trial was adjourned again till Friday 26th October because Tigran couldn’t walk due to illness.
The case was brought forward to Wednesday so he could be freed in other to receive medical treatment abroad.
Meanwhile, Gambaryan’s legal representatives have previously drawn arguments that he had no personal involvement in the money laundering activity/Naira manipulation Binance was being investigated for and therefore should not be detained.
This case between Binance and the EFCC has brought significant attention due to it’s involvement with Cryptocurrency.
