Proverbs 30:28 the spider taketh hold with her hands and is in King’s palaces
Some translations would translate it as a lizard but let’s stick with spiders, the author was trying to discuss four wise animals and had to put the spider as one that knew how to network itself into the palace of kings.
Most times we have mistaken networking for storming into people’s DM and making a brief introduction of what you do, trying to pitch your services and skills, while that in itself is good, there is a more excellent way.

Networking doesn’t just involve meeting new friends but also maintaining old friends, I read in the book written by Beverley Jones, titled “Think like an Entrepreneur, Act like a CEO” how she explained the concept of networking using the web of a spider and it brought much enlightenment to the topic for me.
The spider doesn’t just spin or weave a web because it needs a home but primarily because it needs food.
So the first lesson to learn from a spider is that it looks for a suitable place where it can get the right prey, so networking with the right person matters and in the right industry as well. The spider does not need to wait till it is hungry to create its web, it weaves and spins the web way before it gets hungry, the essence of networking is exchanging help and support with other people, the key is to remain alert to small, easy opportunities to add value to others. Sometimes it would require you to connect with a new friend/connection to an old connection who can help them solve a need.
The best time to establish a connection is when you don’t need one so I always would advise an undergraduate to explore LinkedIn when they are not searching for jobs so that they won’t seem desperate looking for connections only because they need a job.
Another beautiful thing about the spider is that it brings the web out of itself, and offer value from what you have, your expertise, your skill, your time, and your resources. Sometimes all it takes to connect is just reposting or a comment. The spider takes time weaving the silk and it usually isn’t noticed until it has finished spinning the web, with patience and commitment it gets the job done, some networking might take you a while to bond with the person but don’t get discouraged.
After the network has been established, there has to be an accountability system to check up on them, it could be a new month message, replying to their stories and posts, frequent calls and text messages, visits, and hangouts.
For the spider, it is the gum that keeps the web in place and also captures the prey, it is easier for one whose relationship has been frequently maintained and managed to recommend you for a role based on their perception, knowledge of you, or an information shared when you spent quality time with them.

The last part is the waiting part, the spider just waits for its prey after all the weaving and is quickly notified when a prey falls into the web because of how it has centered itself, it even knows where to walk to not be entangled because the gum also captures the spider, try not to offend the relationship you have created and made, Do these and you would make a great network.
