Love is… | Jason Stadtlander

I know that there is a thin line between Selfishness and Jealousy, and most times the both of them are intertwined or either mistaken for the other. Please bear with me lets discuss both.

So what really is selfishness, Selfishness is only when you think of yourself, you come first before any and everything. Your pleasure is what matters most to you.

You might care about the other person but not as much as you care about yourself. Jesus knowing how well people could be selfish summarised it this way “Love your neighbour as YOU LOVE YOURSELF”

But is this really possible? If Jesus said it, then it is possible.

Let’s discuss Jealousy.

Jealousy is different from envy… Envy is coveting something that is not yours. Jealousy is protecting something that is already yours. You can envy your friend’s spouse. But you can be Jealous over your own spouse.

You can get Jealous over a position that you think should have been yours. You envy a position that you know isn’t yours.

Still Confused? I’ll explain better.

Paul said “I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him” (2 Corinthians 11:2)

He didn’t want anything to affect his own fruit (Church)

I love to think that part of the Joy that made Jesus endure the cross was You and I. It wasn’t a selfish Joy, it was the Joy of having brothers and sisters become partakers of his Blessing and Glory. The Joy of seeing Heaven filled with God’s best creation, the Joy of seeing Man seated on his rightful place.

It was this wisdom that Solomon used to judge the case of the two mothers arguing over a child. True love is jealous but not selfish. The mother’s love over her child is so Jealous that it would let her give her own child to another woman (selflessness) than to see her own Child die. Now you get it right?

How do you know that your love is a Jealous one and not Selfish? How do you give to your beloved. Can you willingly give for the benefit of your beloved to the point that it costs you.

If God tells you to let go of something so Precious to you for the sake of someone else. Would you be selfless enough to love that neighbour as you love yourself. Can you quickly turn down yourself for an offer or position that you know verily that Someone else who is better and did better deserves or would you quickly cover it up with “Grace found me” and move on.

Meditate on These Things.
