I was coming back from the market on a public bus. There was slow traffic.

A little boy selling sachet water tried to cross to the other side to sell sachet water to some people in a vehicle.

He missed his step and fell down breaking his plastic basin, throwing all the sachet water away, and some bursting in the process.

People along the road started shouting “you nor dey look where you dey go?”

Nigerians are always quick to judge and blame instead of sympathy.

The boy had his head bowed in sadness trying to gather the remaining sachet water.

The people who wanted to buy had gone without sympathy. The boy was not more than 13 years… I can imagine the condition of the family that made them send out a boy that young to the highway to sell in order for the family to survive… LIFE!!!!!

I asked the woman sitting close to me on the bus how much is a bag of sachet water… she said about 250 Naira but she is not sure.

I paid the conductor N500 and he gave me N300 change.

I called the boy, he came to my window and I gave him N200.

The woman sitting close to me gave him N200.

The man sitting close to the door stretched his hand across me and the woman and gave him N500.

The lady sitting close to the driver gave him N200

The man at the front seat called him over, gave him 2000 Naira, and told him to go home.

The little boy Thanked us, picked his broken basin maybe as evidence to his mother, and left.

I tried not to cry… I am happy I started a motion.

My late father told me,
“If you go watch a masquerade dancing and you want people to clap… start clapping and cheering, people might call you crazy, but some would follow you!”

We might not be able to change the world, but we can change the life of one person.
