HOW A SPOUSE CAN AVOID LEGAL ISSUES REGARDING PROPERTIES IN MARRIAGE
Sometime ago, a friend told me jokingly that she won’t marry an Igbo guy.
Out of curiosity, I asked her why and the answer she gave me was very funny, She told me that “Igbo widows were treated unfairly after their husbands die”
As funny as this may seem, there are people who don’t marry a certain tribesman because of certain strongholds, superstitious beliefs and school of thoughts.
We all have a right to believe what we want to believe. Funny enough the Nollywood industry hasn’t even been helping matters.
There are scenarios where widows are treated unjustly, asked to drink the water used to bathe their husbands, swear before a shrine, have their husbands property taken away from them greedily.
This isn’t an Igbo thing, or tradition, it’s a worldly thing, people would always try to oppress the silent and helpless.
Times without number, the bible shows this repeatedly, even when the daughters of Zelophedad met Moses for their father’s inheritance, the daughter of Caleb asking for more inheritance, Jephthah’s mom denied an inheritance, the shunnamite woman whom the king restored al her lands and property and a parable of the widow and the Judge.
So it really isn’t an Igbo culture, it’s done everywhere greedy men exist.
But while she told me about it, I thought about a possible solution to it and I came out with three possible ways to avoid humiliation.
1. Ensure that your husband gets a will, this cannot be over emphasized. A will is a legal document that a testator uses to distribute his properties and assets amongst his beneficiaries.
A will doesn’t really need the presence of a lawyer, although a doctor is advised to guide one when writing a will, you might need two or more witnesses while writing your last will and testament.
There are other factors like, the testator’s signature must come after the will, any other information after the signature would not be recognized or respected.
The will should be written with a sound mind and by someone above the age of a major.
However a will can be revoked if it is physically torn, mutilated or it’s signature is struck by the testator.
2. The second way is to get an insurance policy for yourself, I’ll keep repeating that the life insurance isn’t for the insured but his or her family and loved ones.
Insurance kicks in when the insured is dead, every Life insurance policy is apportioned to the named beneficiary.
The beauty about insurance is that the details of the beneficiary is started in the policy, but I would advise that it’s best to have a relationship manager that you can trust, one who knows the family, one who really cares because the greed of man can never be exhausted,
3. Another point is a court marriage, this prevents bigamy, bigamy is the marriage of another spouse when already legally married to someone else. According to some laws, it is punishable by minimum five years imprisonment.
It solves the issue of will, that is if none of the spouses has a will written prior to their death, instantly all of the husband’s assets are owned by the spouse.
4. Lastly is effective communication. some spouses don’t communicate their assets with each other which is very wrong.
Imagine if the daughters of Zelophedad weren’t aware of their dad’s inheritance. Most men have assets, insurances, policies, shareholdings, that their wives aren’t aware of just in the bid not to make their wives steal it from them or demand for more money.
If you cannot marry someone whom you would be vulnerable with, please stay single by al means. No one can really help you if you don’t help them with the information.
Even in salvation, there has to be confession, God isn’t going to assume that you need his help, you have to effectively communicate that to him.
Effective communication is key, discuss on sensitive and delicate matters as usual, even Jezebel (as evil as she was) communicated with her husband, that was why she was able to know that Ahab needed Naboth’s vineyard, notice that Ahab told Jezebel ALL that Elijah had done at Mount Carmel which made her to swear to kill him.
Personally I think I saved the best for the last. Hope you found value?
