DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PROJECT MGR, PROGRAM MGR AND OPERATION MANAGER

Most business owners make the mistake of getting the wrong manager to help them organise their affairs and operations but after reading this, as a business owner you would know how better to recruit your managers.

Ready, set , read🙂

Before we start talking about the managers, it would best to explain the difference between project, programs and operations.

A project is defined as an effort to create or modify a specific product or service. Projects are temporary work efforts with a clear beginning and end. Projects can be was completely contained within a specific unit or department, or include other organizations and vendors.

A project can’t be continual, it is a task with well stipulated time frame, budget and scope with a well defined goal that should be achieved, it could be painting, a marriage, a party, building a house etc

The project manager is in charge of managing the production of the required deliverables. planning and monitoring the project. adopting any delegation and use of project assurance roles within agreed reporting structures. preparing and maintaining project, stage and exception plans as required.

All in all, this project manager’s role involves

Breaking the project into tasks, breaking down the tasks and subtasks, setting an appropriate schedule for the development of certain deliverables, defining milestones, and highlighting the project dependencies. These roles can either be delegated to other members of the project team or by the manager himself.

A program is an officially organized system of services, activities, or opportunities that help people achieve something:

Program management is the process of managing several related projects, often with the intention of improving an organization’s performance. It is distinct from project management.

While project managers oversee individual projects, program managers preside over the strategy and success of multiple connected projects.

In an organizational context, a program refers to a group of related projects (or a combination of projects and programs) that together support a strategic business initiative. This initiative could include: launching a product, implementing a new sales process, or opening a new location.

So a program could be that the company increases their brand equity, this program could have many other projects under it like, launching a new product, changing the brand color, changing their distribution channel, content marketing etc and each of these projects would have their different Project manager reporting to the program manager.

Lastly we would be talking about Operations managers.

Operations managers are responsible for managing activities that are part of the production of goods and services. Their direct responsibilities include managing both the operations process, embracing design, planning, control, performance improvement, and operations strategy.

They provide inspired leadership for the organization. Make important policy, planning, and strategy decisions.

They also develop, implement, and review operational policies and procedures and assist HR with recruiting when necessary.

This also shows that unlike the project that has a stipulated time frame, operations happen daily, so you should know the competence of whosoever that would be the operations manager.

I’m hope this guides you while recruiting your manager.
