Cutting-edge Royal Navy missiles, which effectively intercepted hostile drones in the Red Sea, are set to undergo substantial enhancements through an upgrade program that will create hundreds of job opportunities in the UK.
Royal Navy missiles have been instrumental in effectively intercepting hostile drones in the Red Sea, with plans underway to significantly upgrade the Sea Viper Air Defence system. The enhancements will include updated missiles featuring a new warhead and software update, transforming the system into the most capable naval air defence system ever developed for the Royal Navy.
Valued at Β£405 million, the upgrade contracts awarded to MBDA UK will not only boost the Sea Viper’s capabilities but also create 350 UK jobs in areas such as Stevenage, Cowes, Bristol, and Bolton. The contracts will cover the enhancement of the Sea Viper capability on board Type 45 warships, as well as enhanced in-service support and availability of the system for the next five years.
Defence Secretary Grant Shapps emphasized the significance of adapting to keep the UK and its allies safe amidst the worsening situation in the Middle East. The Sea Viper system has proved its effectiveness by shooting down multiple attack drones, demonstrating the vital role it plays in the Royal Navy’s defensive operations.
The Sea Viper enhancement project is set to deliver Ballistic Missile Defence Capability, with plans to upgrade the Royal Navy’s existing Aster 30 missiles and evaluate the introduction of the new Aster 30 Block 1NT missile. This upgrade initiative aims to ensure that the UK’s Type 45 destroyers are equipped to counter more complex and evolving threats, solidifying their position as one of the most advanced vessels in the Royal Navy fleet.
The enhanced Sea Viper system is expected to reach full operational capability by Autumn 2032, confirming the Royal Navy’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements in maritime defense.
