CAN VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS BE COMPLETELY ERADICATED

Last year, 25th of November was celebrated as the international day of elimination of Violence against women and Girls. But it seemed many people didn’t notice.

Violence against women has slowly been on the increase, Statistics show that 1 out of every 4 women has been hit by a male. This is becoming a pandemic that kills slowly and no one is noticing, (probably because the symptoms take years to show up)

Violence is any act that is done physically to inflict wounds or pain to anyone. Although violence can be done to both Male and Females but let’s choose to focus on the women because they have the higher numbers of victims.

It is also amazing that the violence against women is done by intimate partners (boyfriends, Fiance, Spouses) of course no man walks randomly and hit a lady except the man is mentally ill or a Robber or a rapist.

The damage done by violence by intimate partners go beyond the physical pain, sometimes it affects mentally and emotionally, women are more emotional (although most of them won’t agree to this).

Physical pain do heal but mental and emotional pain take a while, and sometimes destabilises the victims. They end up becoming shadows of their formal self, losing the will to love and care for someone else, others end up hating Men and channel all that hurt into something productive like becoming independent But the pain is still there.

Most perpetrators of this act are usually

✓Those who witnessed their mothers being maltreated by their Father while growing up

✓Men who were taught by their traditions that women are meant to be beaten to remain Submissive, That the more oppressive a Man is, the more respect he gets.

✓ Men who are addicted to Alcohol, smoking and drugs

✓ Men who are unfaithful to their spouses or partners

✓Sexists, Anti-Feminists, Masochists, Misogynists etc

But could there really be a way to end this plague, because like we earlier mentioned, the more children witness their mothers being beaten and the Society does nothing about it, the more they know they can do the same and get away with it, and are subconsciously programmed to believe that it is a norm. However there are ways to cure this pandemic.

✓Government should make laws that see to it that women who are violated are taken care of, Alot of Non governmental and public agencies should be put in place to make sure that they get the justice that they deserve. And certain laws should be put in place to scare others from hurting women even if it is done by their spouses.

✓ children should be educated on how the girls should be treated in schools while they are still young, teachers should look out for young boys who pick on girls in school and discipline them in the presence of the entire school to pass the message clearer that society doesn’t approve of it.

✓ sensitisation should be done massively to educate women on how they are to respond quickly when ever they have experience any violence at all. What steps should be taken, numbers to call and also the mental health also should be considered, a therapist can be recommended.

✓Most of the violence is caused by Men not respecting women because of their financial status, education, mental capacity etc. Women should be empowered to be financially stable if not financially free. 9 out of 10 women who have experienced violence are either depending on the person who hurt them for food or their needs which doesn’t make them report the case.

A girl child should be taught to chase her dreams and not depend on any man. Let them be taught that they can be what ever they want to be.
