MY REVIEW OF THE MOVIE “TIK TIK… BOOM”

The movie is a true life story of a monologue performed by Jonathan Larson in front of an audience at New York Theatre Workshop.

Jonathan Larson is a 29 year old music writer, a creative who could literally make a music out of anything until his 30th birthday in 1990, prior to this performance known as ‘Superbia’ he had been rejected by many other producers and record labels who felt he was either too young or too original.

In 1990, Jonathan juggles work at the Moondance Diner in SoHo with preparing for a workshop at Playwrights Horizons of his musical Superbia, which he has been working on for eight years. He has a party at home with friends, including his former roommate Michael, who left acting for advertising, his girlfriend Susan, a dancer-turned-teacher, and fellow waiters Freddy and Carolyn (“Boho Days”). While alone later, Susan tells Jonathan about a teaching job at Jacob’s Pillow and asks him to come too

This movie shows how as a creative, one tries so hard to make their art noticed, one of the quotes that struck me was when Jonathan said “it is expensive to make art” and truly it is. sometimes you need to believe so much in what you’re doing and keep doing in the front of those who would be bold enough to tell you that you really don’t know what you’re doing.

Jonathan actually thought that after Superbia he would get noticed but he didn’t, he actually wanted to meet Micheal his best friend who was living his best life (and later was diagnosed with HIV) he had spent alot of money to see Superbia flourish, a dream no one believed in except himself and he did get alot of support from his friends which leads me to the next part, as a creative you need partners, collaborators and sponsors either through support financially, emotionally and physically.

I loved how Sondheim Stephen encouraged him, sometimes as an influencer that people look up to, you never know how much your encouragement can go along way to help an upcoming, newbie or rookie artist or creative, they would need all the support they can get and words of encouragement coming from someone who has made it actually soothes. If you can’t support any creative, artist, please just tell them you believe in them (this is more than enough)

Although Jonathan died before his successful concert which was ‘Rent’ but today he is viewed by thousands of people as one who changed the face and idea of musical concerts.

My last advice is for creatives who I would recommend to watch this movie with an open heart, if you’re passionate about anything, if you have a dream who would love to see accomplished, be persistent in it, there are alot of people living lives that wasn’t designed for them and of course it takes a while for the world to accept what isn’t the norm but you deserve to make it work and that dream to come true.

It would be painful most times, there would be sacrifices, Jonathan sacrificed a luxurious lifestyle and even the love of his life but at the end it’s going to be worth it.

PS: Parental guidance is advised and please watch the movie with a tissue or handkerchief. I didn’t cry though but I can relate with the pain in this movie
