New Nigerian words made their way into the Oxford English Dictionary – They include, danfo, okada, next tomorrow, severally, buka, among many others.

According to a statement from Oxford, some of the words have been popular since the second half of the 20th century Nigerian-English language has received great attention as Oxford English Dictionary said it has added 29 Nigerian words to its words database in its January updates. In a statement by its editor, Danica Salazar, most of the new words are from Nigerian usages, coinages, and those that have been used since the twentieth century.

“The majority of these new additions are either borrowings from Nigerian languages, or unique Nigerian coinages that have only begun to be used in English in the second half of the twentieth century, mostly in the 1970s and 1980s,” a part of the statement read.

Danfo is a popular yellow bus in Lagos that most residents use as their public means of transportation. Some of these words are Kannywood, okada, buka, severally, bukateria, next tomorrow, mama put, danfo, barbing salon, gist, tokunbo, send-forth.
