The Federal High Court in Lagos, Nigeria granted bail of 10 million naira on Wednesday to the business mogul and socialite Cubana Chief Priest over naira abuse.

Previously, the famous Nigerian celebrity bar man, Okechukwu Paschal popularly known as CUBANA CHIEF PRIEST was officially charged to the Court of Law by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), at the Federal High Court, Lagos and ultimately granted bail of N10 million.

The EFCC’s Prosecutor Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) alongside seven other Lawyers representing the Chairman of the Commission filed a 3- count charge against the socialite on 4th April 2024, accusing him of naira abuse and mutilation at a social event, thereby going against the Central Bank’s Act of 2007.

Cubana Chief Priest who was before Justice Kehinde Ogundare, was charged on 3- counts all relating to Naira abuse.

The first count reads;

it was alleged, “that you, Okechukwu Pascal on 13th Feb. 2024, at Eko Hotel, within the jurisdiction of the court, while dancing during a social event, tampered with funds in the denomination of N500 (Five Hundred Naira) issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying same for two hours, and you thereby committed an offence, contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007”.

The second count reads;

it was alleged, “that you Okechukwu Pascal sometime in 2020, in Lagos during a social event, tampered with funds in the denomination of N500 (Five Hundred Naira) issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying same for two hours, and you thereby committed an offence, contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007”.

In Count 3, it was alleged, “that you Okechukwu Pascal sometime in January 2024, in Lagos during a social event, tampered with funds in the denomination of N500 (Five Hundred Naira) issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying same and you thereby committed an offence, contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007”.

However, Cubana Chief Priest pleaded “Not guilty “.  Punch reported, the court granted him a N10 million naira bail, which seems better than the popular cross dresser, Bobrisky who was charged with similar offence and yet got a jail of 6 months.

The Eagle eyes of the EFCC seems to be everywhere making sure to keep citizens under the law, by bringing in offenders of the law.

In a statement, EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said,

 “Many of them have made useful statements to the commission and many more have been invited by investigators working on the matter.”

“The EFCC will not relent in its no-sacred-cow mode of operations and the public should be wary of running afoul of laws against the crime.”

Does this mean the EFCC will not be sparing anyone who neglects the Law?
