Boris Johnson has secured a huge victory in the general election, tearing seats from Labour in its strongholds. It was nonetheless largely determined by Brexit.

The Conservatives clinched their majority after winning 326 seats – their majority is now on course to be between 78 and 82.
Mr Johnson told staffers at the Tory party’s HQ that “no one can now refute” his “stonking mandate” to deliver Brexit.

Speaking at the private gathering in the early hours, he said: “We must understand now what an earthquake we have created… the way in which we have changed the political map in this country.

“We have to grapple with the consequences of that. We have to change our own party. We have to rise to the level of events.”

He added: “We have to rise to the challenge that the British people have given us.”

Listing a number of Tory gains from Labor, he joked his party had turned Red car into “blue car”. Meanwhile, US President, Donald Trump has congratulated Boris for the win, stating that it offers the opportunity for “massive” deals.

Jeremy Corbyn announced that he would step down after a “process of reflection.”

This was very much a Brexit election and, in the end, Johnson’s campaign promise to “Get Brexit Done” appears to have swayed the vote.The result is a clear indication that voters are tired of the country being stuck in a limbo and want to move on.

Johnson has already struck a Brexit “divorce” deal with Brussels, but failed to pass it through Parliament after Remain-backing Conservatives rebelled.Having purged the rebels from his own party, and with his newly acquired majority, that should no longer be a problem.Once the UK leaves the European Union, Johnson plans to immediately start negotiating a new trade agreement with the bloc.
