WHY YOUR BUSINESS NEEDS A BRAND STORY
A story is a narration of events, whether it’s something you experienced of something another individual experienced or something you imagined.
Words are powerful, after all it is how we communicate our thoughts to each other but much more than what you say is how you say it.
Stories are ways to say things in a way that appeals to the emotion of men.
Instead of telling someone how good you are why not tell a story about how good you were to someone…
Now a brand needs to communicate their purpose and vision in a way that their target audience can be able to comprehend. This is why most brands have their stories to share.
The Bible tells us of a King who was very sad because he wanted the vineyard of a subject, this vineyard was very close to his palace and when this subject refused. It broke the King, but his wife, a mistress of persuasion and influence, who knew the power of stories paid the very first storysellers to spread false stories about this neighbour that he blasphemed.
So powerful was this effect that the man was stoned to death without even being questioned or tried.
Another example in the Bible was when some people paid the soldiers who guarded the tomb of Jesus to spread stories that his body was stolen, this story is still being spoken of in these modern times…
Time would fail me to discuss about Paul, Timothy and Demetrius, the silversmith who told a story about the goddess Artemis, when business was going bad for them because men had left idols to start worshipping God, so great was his story that it caused an uproar, an uproar that made even the town clerk to validate his story and stop the riot for fear of being sanctioned.
Most celebrities now pay people to spread good stories about them, like kings of the old who paid their orators to tell tales of their victories and exploits before their subjects and rivals… King Hezekiah also received one of such stories of the exploits of the King of Assyria and it got him worried.
The best way to teach is by example, the second best way is to tell a story, somebody in your past has probably told you a story that speaks to you, even today, influencing your current thoughts and perception.
Something as little as a folklore, a myth, superstition. Even up till now when I see a shooting star, I believe that gods are fighting in the heavens. Lol because of a story I saw in a Greek movie.
Another beautiful thing about stories is that they know how to replay themselves at the appropriate time. Now adverts are making use of stories so that they can be able to relate more with that brand.
While I was young, there was this advert about Kanu Nwankwo and peak milk, somehow it just stuck in my mind that if I wanted to be like him, I needed peak milk. Lmao don’t blame me, blame the story.
How can you tell stories about your brand.
1. Make your customer the hero of the story, let your product or service help your customer to be the hero in your story.
Every movie always starts with an ordinary man(customer), who is faced with a problem, discovers his calling (potential solution) meets a guide(your company, product or service) and the guide helps him to achieve his calling. Whether it is Harry Potter, Spiderman, Lord of the rings etc
Most stories follow that format. Tell a story that makes your customer see himself at the destination he wants to go and your product or service is that vehicle.
2. Tell stories about how you started the brand, people want to know the story behind the glory. How did you become who you are. We are all humans so we understand that there was a time you didn’t have a dime on you, a time you were broke, a time when you were vulnerable, share those moments
3. Share stories of heroes who took your products, most companies and firms call it testimonials, share the story of a happy and satisfied customer.
4. Share stories of other workers, people who work behind the scenes to make things easier and happy for the hero(customer)
Is there a driver who transports the procurement and in the end, your hero defeats his villain, is there a cook who comes to work very early just so that she can prepare the meals on time etc.
5. Share stories about the challenges you encountered while you are helping the hero achieve his dreams. If there was a time, a car broke down during supply, share it, share your vulnerability as a business. If the server was down, share how it happened and create empathy between your brand and your audience.
