Authorities have officially confirmed the identity of the individual responsible for the attack aimed at former US President Donald Trump over the weekend. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, tragically lost his life when Secret Service agents intervened after the shooting incident. The FBI released a statement early on Sunday morning, shedding light on Crooks’ background as a resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. This location is situated approximately 35 miles to the south of Butler, where Trump was conducting his rally.

Crooks, positioned on a building rooftop outside the rally’s designated security area, made the fateful decision to open fire on the former President. The swift response from the Secret Service agents led to the termination of Crooks’ life, preventing further harm from unfolding. 

The aftermath of the incident prompted a thorough review of security protocols and measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

This year’s presidential election would have been the first he was old enough to vote in. Federal Election Commission records show that a donor listed as Thomas Crooks with the same address gave $15 to a Democratic-aligned political action committee called the Progressive Turnout Project in January 2021. This financial contribution adds another layer to the investigation, hinting at possible political affiliations or interests that may have influenced his actions.

When reached by CNN late Saturday night, Crooks’ father, Matthew Crooks, said he was trying to figure out “what the hell is going on” but would “wait until I talk to law enforcement” before speaking about his son.

The father’s reaction also hints at the shock and confusion surrounding the situation, as families grapple with the sudden loss of a loved one and struggle to make sense of the events that transpired.

After being killed at the scene, Crooks didn’t have any identification on his body, so agents had to “run his DNA and get biometric confirmation,” Kevin Rojek, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, said at a press conference Saturday night before the gunman was named.
