Influence of Afrobeat

Afrobeat has attracted many jazz musicians. From Roy Ayers to Randy Weston, collaborations have led to albums like Africa – Centre of the World, by Roy Ayers. This album was released on the Polydore label, in 1981. Branford Marsilis, an American jazz saxophonist included samples of Fela’s “Beasts of No Nation” on his Buckshot LeFonque Album.

Afrobeat also has influenced many important musicians and producers, including Brian Eno and David Byrne. [13] They both contributed to Talking Heads’ 1980 album Remain In Light. This album brought Afrobeat and Western music together. A new generation of DJs, and musicians from the 2000s, have created compilations and remixes from these rare recordings. This has allowed the genre to be reintroduced to new audiences and fans of afropop as well as groove.

A small Afrobeat scene was established in Brooklyn in the late 1990s and early2000s. It included Antibalas and The Daktaris. Other artists such as Zongo Junction are now on the Afrobeat scene. Afrobeat has been cited by many others, including the El Michels Affair and The Budos Band. Antibalas’ horn section has been featured as a guest musician on BBC Radio’s 2008 album Dear Science. Vampire WeekendPaul Simon also have a lot of Afrobeat influences. Antibalas won the Grammy Award in 2020 for Best Global Music Album.
