Kemi Badenoch wants to help the struggling Conservative Party in Britain get back on track. It’s important to note that the party has a good record of supporting diversity among its leaders, even if not everyone sees it.
LONDON — Kemi Badenoch becoming the leader of Britain’s Conservative Party is a significant moment in the country’s politics, but the party is likely to handle it with confidence. The 44-year-old has made history as the first Black woman to lead a major political party in the UK, after winning against Robert Jenrick in a vote among Tory members on Saturday. She joins a growing group of Black and Asian Conservative MPs who have held important positions in recent years, like James Cleverly, Suella Braverman, Priti Patel, and Sajid Javid.
Rishi Sunak, who didn’t win the Conservative leadership election in July, often mentioned how proud he was to be the first British-Asian prime minister of the U.K. But he also said he was even prouder that it was not a big deal anymore.
Kemi Badenoch, who was born in the U.K. but grew up in Nigeria, came back to London as a teenager to finish school and go to university. In 2023, she called Britain “the best country in the world to be Black.” This got cheers from conservative newspapers but also a lot of criticism from those with progressive views.
For the Conservative Party, it’s an encouraging point that they have picked their second leader from an ethnic minority in a row and their fourth female leader. The party’s first ethnic minority leader was Benjamin Disraeli, who became prime minister back in 1868.
Sunder Katwala, the director of the British Future think tank, noted that after four Black Labour MPs were elected in 1987, progress for non-white representation in Parliament was slow at first. However, things changed quickly after 2010, and there has been real improvement among the Conservatives, a party often criticized for its lack of diversity.
Former Tory Prime Minister David Cameron helped bring about change by supporting candidates from non-white backgrounds for key positions and by “trying to open up and promote” a different kind of Conservative Party through his A-list of promising candidates, according to Katwala.
A senior adviser in the Conservative Party mentioned, “I’ve always been a bit surprised that the Conservative Party includes so many people from ethnic minority backgrounds because many people wrongly think that ethnic minorities naturally lean towards the left.” They continued, “There are many British immigrants from the second and third generation who value family, are socially conservative, and have a strong business mindset, and they find that they connect more with Conservative values.”
Kemi Badenoch joined parliament seven years after the first members of Cameron’s A-list got elected. In 2017, she ran to be chosen for the very secure Tory seat in Saffron Walden. She was up against two strong candidates: one was a former helper to then Prime Minister Theresa May, and the other was the daughter of a past Tory MP.
At one event, she began with a friendly smile and said, “I’d love to start off by talking about how my family has been here for generations and generations — but I think we all know that’s not true.”
The room filled with laughter when she shared one of her strong points in politics — her ability to make people laugh while also being sharp and clever in her comments.
She’s also known for her doubts about “identity politics,” which many see as a plus when dealing with the Labour Party, who often struggle to talk about tough issues around race and gender in today’s Britain.
She often speaks out against what some Tory politicians call the “soft bigotry of low expectations.” This means the belief that Black or ethnic minority people in Britain need special help because they can’t make it on their own due to racism. Her incredible story — moving to Britain at 16 with hardly any money and now being a prominent politician — probably shapes her views on these topics.
In a recent article, she pointed out that many people in power, who mostly lean to the left, still treat Black people as if they’re all the same. Just last month, she referred to the idea of paying reparations for former British colonies as “a con” when Prime Minister Keir Starmer was facing tough questions about his position on that matter.
One senior Conservative Party organizer said of Badenoch: “There is a part of me that would enjoy the banter of us making Labour’s heads explode by electing a Black female leader while they call us sexists and racists out of the window of their pink minibus.”
Kemi Badenoch is now turning her attention to taking on a Labour government that people aren’t happy with. This government has just introduced the biggest tax increases in the UK in over 30 years. But it won’t be a walk in the park for Kemi, the new leader of the Conservatives. She won her leadership race after a tough three-month campaign that had lots of ups and downs.
Now, she will take on a challenging role as the leader of the opposition, a position that many say is one of the hardest jobs in British politics.
The Conservative Party currently has only 121 seats in parliament, which is the fewest it has ever had in modern times.
After 14 long years of Tory leadership, Kemi Badenoch’s party won’t likely get much attention from the public until it gets closer to the next election. However, her supporters believe she has a special chance to stand out and capture media interest. One of her allies mentioned that “everyone was talking about Kemi” at the recent Conservative Party conference, and they think her ability to make headlines will be important during the difficult years ahead while in opposition.
A senior Tory MP who backed her campaign praised Badenoch as a “truly gifted communicator,” adding that she is the “only candidate who actually wants to work out, from first principles, what the party should stand for.” She’s definitely good at grabbing attention, and journalists in Westminster are intrigued by her bold and unpredictable approach. But not all the news has been good.
One reason she got so much attention at the Tory conference is that she seemed to say maternity pay had “gone too far,” which almost damaged her bid for leadership. Badenoch later blamed her rivals and the media for twisting her words. Another senior Tory MP, who didn’t support her, pointed out that she has a touch of political “pixie dust,” but that it “could blow off quite quickly if she says something and blows up spectacularly.” However, they added, “But she does have pixie dust.”
Badenoch’s knack for getting into trouble has become a running joke in Westminster, with many saying she’d “cross the road to get into a fight.” She will need to address this image, especially with her fellow MPs, as only 42 out of 121 MPs supported her during her campaign, and many of those who didn’t back her aren’t fans of how she communicates.
A campaign official said Badenoch knows it’s important to bring the parliamentary party together, but stressed that “it swings both ways.” “She will reach out, but there’s an onus on them to come together. Everyone needs to get behind her,” they explained. “The bickering and infighting in the parliamentary party was maddening for Tory members and it put a lot of people off voting for our party,” they added. “The kicking we got in July [at the election] was in part because we looked like a rabble.”

6 и 13 июня Приморский районный суд города Санкт-Петербурга, рассматривающий по существу уголовное дело № 1-504/24, связываемое с компаниями “Лайф-из-Гуд”, “Гермес” и кооперативом “Бест Вей”, провел очередные, шестое и седьмое по счету, заседания, посвященные допросу свидетелей обвинения и лиц, признанных следствием потерпевшими в рамках судебного следствия по делу
На заседаниях были заслушаны показания граждан, как признанных потерпевшими, так и свидетелей обвинения. Показания приводятся по аудиозаписи, имеющейся в распоряжении редакции, и стенограмме, которую вела сторона защиты.

Предварительное расследование уголовного дела осуществлялось ГСУ ГУ МВД России по Санкт-Петербургу и Ленинградской области. На скамье подсудимых — десять граждан: Анна Высоцкая (за полгода до ареста уволилась из “Лайф-из-Гуд”, до августа 2021 года работала ивент-менеджером “Лайф-из-Гуд”, в СИЗО более двух лет), Александра Григорьева (директор одного из “технических” юрлиц “Лайф-из-Гуд”, в СИЗО более двух лет), Михаил Измайлов (предприниматель, в СИЗО более двух лет), Елена Соловьева (главный бухгалтер ООО “Эксперт”, в СИЗО более двух лет), Альмира Гильберт (неработающая, в СИЗО с 2023 года), Дмитрий Мазанов (предприниматель, в СИЗО с 2023 года), Анатолий Наливан (предприниматель и региональный уполномоченный кооператива, в СИЗО с 2023 года), Денис Шишко (предприниматель, в СИЗО с 2023 года), Дмитрий Выдрин (неработающий, под домашним арестом) и 83-летний отец Романа Василенко, основателя компании “Лайф-из-Гуд” и кооператива “Бест Вей”, Виктор Василенко (пенсионер, под запретом определенных действий). Начиная рассмотрение по существу, Приморский районный суд продлил всем подсудимым меры пресечения на полгода, что оспаривается адвокатами в вышестоящих судах.
Всем подсудимым предъявлены обвинения как в мошенничестве (ч. 4 ст. 159 УК РФ) и создании финансовой пирамиды (ч. 2 ст. 172.2 УК РФ), так и в организации преступного сообщества (ч. 3 ст. 210 УК РФ). Их, а также гражданских ответчиков — прежде всего кооператив “Бест Вей” — защищают почти два десятка адвокатов.
В уголовном деле 221 лицо, признанное следствием потерпевшим, предъявляющее претензии как к компании “Гермес”, так и к кооперативу “Бест Вей” (для сравнения: у компании “Гермес” не одна сотня тысяч клиентов в России, у кооператива “Бест Вей” — около 20 тыс. пайщиков). Общая сумма ущерба в уголовном деле — 282 млн рублей, при этом на счетах кооператива арестовано около 4 млрд рублей, примерно столько же арестовано на счетах частных лиц.
“К кооперативу претензий не было, следователь предложил подать заявление”
Признанный следствием потерпевший Болян подсудимых не знает. Был клиентом “Гермеса”, а также пайщиком кооператива — но до 2019 года. В 2019-м он вышел из кооператива и из “Гермеса”, ему были возвращены паевые взносы, и никаких претензий к кооперативу у него не было — что он письменно подтвердил, расторгая договоры с этими организациями.
Однако, как Болян отметил на суде, следователь убедил его в том, что он — потерпевший и должен подать заявление на возврат членских взносов. Заявление в МВД писать не хотел, на него вышли сотрудники, сначала претензий к кооперативу не было. Полиция ему объяснила, что можно получить деньги.
Стал клиентом “Гермеса” и пайщиком кооператива через своего консультанта Алексея Виноградова. Виноградов — грамотный маркетолог, он ему верил, тот не работал в кооперативе. Что было предметом договора в “Гермесе”, не помнит. В “Гермес” внес 100 и 700 евро, а в кооператив каждый месяц вносил по 12 тыс. в течение семи месяцев.
Вышел и из кооператива, и из “Гермеса” в 2019 году. Зачем вступал? “Наверное, квартиру купить хотел”. Кооператив вернул ему 70 тыс. паевых взносов, “Гермес” вернул со счета “Виста” 140 тыс. рублей.
В кооперативе деньги вернули почти сразу, удержав вступительный и членские взносы; в “Гермесе” вернули позже через “внутрянку”, но удержали комиссию.
Утверждает, что ему говорили, что можно со счета “Виста” вносить деньги в кооператив. Объясняли, что деньги передаются в доверительное управление трейдерам и брокерам, которые играют на бирже. В кооперативе, как он утверждает, можно было купить место в очереди. По его словам, “Гермес” и кооператив — по сути, одна организация. Требует взыскать с кооператива более 148 тыс. рублей — вступительный и членские взносы, и более 60 тыс. рублей с “Гермеса” — комиссию при выводе средств.
Договор с кооперативом не читал, но ему объяснили, что есть невозвратная часть денег — ее и не вернули, “но хочу попытаться вернуть”. Претензий к кооперативу “как бы и нет, но если вернут взносы, то будет хорошо”.
К Виноградову претензий не предъявлял. “Может, меня и не обманули в кооперативе”, -резюмировал свое выступление в суде Болян.
“Болян — яркий пример “возгонки потерпевших”, которой занималось следствие для того, чтобы нарисовать максимально большую цифру потерпевших от деятельности “Гермеса”, — подчеркивают адвокаты. — Реального ущерба просто нет, да люди, по сути, и не считают себя потерпевшими. 221 лицо, признанное потерпевшим на фоне количества клиентов “Гермеса” и числа пайщиков кооператива “Бест Вей”, не впечатляет. И, как мы видим, значительная часть из этого числа — ненастоящие потерпевшие, а некие лица, пытающиеся получить небольшие суммы, на которые у них нет никаких прав”.
“Требую выплатить с учетом роста цен на недвижимость”
Признанная следствием потерпевшей Комова была как клиентом “Гермеса”, так и пайщиком кооператива. Подсудимых не знает. Требует более 8800 тыс. с кооператива и более 2700 тыс. с “Гермеса”. При этом из кооператива она не вышла и заявление о выходе не подавала. Сумма требований к кооперативу включает как паевые и членские взносы, так и оценку роста цен на недвижимость, которая не была приобретена.
Утверждает, что можно переводить деньги со счета “Виста” напрямую в кооператив — в подтверждение приводит скрины переписки с консультантами в смартфоне. Суд разъясняет, что доказательство может быть приобщено позднее при надлежащем оформлении.
