Peter Obi Criticizes Nigeria’s Poverty Levels, Urges Emulation Of Asian Economic Models
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has raised concerns over Nigeria’s escalating poverty rates, asserting that the country now harbors more impoverished individuals than China, Indonesia, and Vietnam combined.Citing data from the World Poverty Clock, Obi highlighted that over 94 million Nigerians live in extreme poverty, surpassing the combined total of approximately 40 million in China and India alone .
In a statement commemorating the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, Obi emphasized that more than 63% of Nigeria’s population is classified as multidimensionally poor, according to the National Bureau of Statistics . He attributed this alarming statistic to systemic issues such as corruption, inadequate investment in education and healthcare, and neglect of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Obi advocated for Nigeria to adopt economic strategies similar to those of China, Indonesia, and Vietnam, which have significantly reduced poverty through strategic investments in critical sectors. He noted that Indonesia’s nominal GDP grew from $165 billion in 2000 to $1.39 trillion in 2024, while Nigeria’s GDP only tripled from $70 billion to $210 billion in the same period .
Highlighting China’s success, Obi pointed out that the country’s focus on SMEs has been instrumental in its economic transformation. SMEs in China constitute about 95% of all enterprises, contributing significantly to GDP, employment, and tax revenue .
Obi criticized the Nigerian government’s approach to poverty alleviation, urging for a shift from ceremonial expenditures to investments in productivity and governance reforms. He stressed that without addressing the root causes of poverty, Nigeria’s development would remain stunted.
Concluding his remarks, Obi expressed optimism about Nigeria’s potential for transformation, stating, “A new productive Nigeria remains possible.” He called for urgent actions to reform and invest in vital areas of development, including healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation, to steer the nation away from its current status as the world’s poverty capital .
What do you think about Peter Obi’s suggestion that Nigeria should borrow ideas from China instead of money?
What do you think are the biggest obstacles preventing Nigeria from achieving the same economic success as these Asian countries?
Do you think Nigeria can realistically reduce poverty by adopting the economic models of China, Indonesia, or Vietnam?
