Some of the asylum-seeking refugees that have come to Canada from African nations like Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, and Tanzania are camped out outside the Peter St. city-run shelter for the homeless — some for two weeks sleeping on the sidewalks — on Friday, July 14, 2023. PHOTO BY Ade Ladeinde /ADEBA CONNECTOR

A few members of the Organization called  Associations of  Nigerians in Brampton went out today to meet with the refugees from Africa mostly Nigerians, Ugandans, and Kenyans who have been sleeping outside a Toronto shelter for upward of two to five weeks with the hope of a better life after fleeing political and religious persecution. Only to be treated like waste in the streets of Toronto.  The city is doing the minimum, the reason we say that is because if they were refugees from other parts of the world, they will not be sitting on the streets for 5 days talk less of 5 weeks.

It’s a shame to the Federal Government of Canada, which puts up a front that Canada welcomes immigrants. Meanwhile, they only welcome specific types of people. Others should only come here to work for the country. Africans are known to be hard workers all over the globe. If they are in need of assistance to start their journey in Canada, we believe Canada is more than Capable. They just need to put the racial profiling to the side.

Dear MP/MPP,

Request for immediate action to provide shelter and care for refugees.

I read with utmost surprise and disappointment the July 13, 2023 edition of Toronto Sun, profiling the predicament of some of the asylum-seeking refugees that have come to Canada from African nations like Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania. They are camped outside the Peter St. City-run shelter for the homeless, and some for two weeks sleeping on the sidewalks. See the story here https://torontosun.com/news/local-news/lilley-unleashed-no-refuge-for-the-refugees-in-toronto.

Canada has been known as a nation that’s most friendly and welcoming to refugees, and stories like this put us in a bad light and tell a different story. I know that the number of refugees coming into Canada could be overwhelming, but there’s always something that can be done. It only takes the right action from the right people in the right direction.

This could easily be in Brampton as well. A state of emergency can be declared on refugee accommodation and care, temporary shelters can be set up, all levels of government can be called on to do what they can, emergency funds can be provided and Humanitarian agencies can be engaged to work with the government to run this project.

Shelter is the #1 need of humans, and to live on the streets is just not acceptable. This is a case of injustice against humanity, and with this affecting refugees from African countries, it gives greater concern. I know that special programs were set up for refugees fleeing war-torn nations in Asia and Europe, and I believe that the same can be extended to refugees from Africa too.

I implore you to not treat this with levity; kindly wear your human hat and not your Riding hat, and follow this up with the appropriate quarters. I look forward to hearing from you about this.

Sincerely,

Let’s put some pressure on the government. Also send to Nigerian groups that you belong to.
