In a gripping video, Oyewunmi, Deputy Minority Senate Leader, shares a candid account of his attempt to influence voters with personal funds, only to face staunch opposition from loyal followers of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Venturing into the shadows of political honesty, Olalere Oyewumi, the PDP senator hailing from Osun State, boldly acknowledges his actions of buying votes during the dynamic atmosphere of the 2023 general elections.

In the recent elections, a dangerous game of manipulation unfolded as the integrity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was thrown into question by the widespread practice of vote buying and selling. Meanwhile, ominous shadows loomed as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) strategically positioned their officials in select polling units.

In a widely circulated video, Oyewunmi, the Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, detailed an incident in which he dispatched his assistant on an errand the day before the election, providing personal funds for the purpose of purchasing votes. However, his efforts were rebuffed by staunch supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Communicating in Yoruba, the Representative for the Osun West District and Minority Leader articulated,  “I tried all the tricks I knew to win at the Onilu House (Ile Onilu) polling unit but these people didn’t allow me.

“After exhausting money for the election, I gave my personal money to Ten-Ten to give to people at night to buy votes on the eve of the election, Ten-Ten came back with my money, saying the people rejected it. I was surprised.

“That was why I reached out to these people because I cannot be a Senator and continue to fail there. I was the one who called Ayandosu from Abuja to join me in the PDP. I told him he has talent and that the party he was serving then (APC) would not allow him to grow.”

In response to the unfolding events, the leadership of the APC, represented by its chairman Tajudeen Lawal, asserted that the admission indicated that the Osun election was not conducted in a manner that upheld principles of freedom and fairness.

In a declaration, Lawal asserted: “Senator Oyewumi’s admission served as validation that the recent string of elections in the region, which resulted in triumph for all PDP nominees, including Governor Ademola Adeleke, were shamelessly manipulated.

“The self-confession of Senator Oyewumi was an indication that he is a desperate politician who could go to any length to illegally corner opportunities regardless of what such portends to the right-thinking members of the society.

“In a civilised clime, Senator Oyewumi has no iota of reason to remain a minute longer in the Senate where he has been the Minority Leader based on his self-confession that he engaged in vote-buying during the election that secured a fraudulent victory for him.

“By now, Senator Oyewumi should be a guest of the statutory law enforcement agency constitutionally saddled with the responsibility of investigating such political crime involving a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

As the dust settles on the controversial election, the Nigerian political landscape remains turbulent, with accusations flying back and forth between rival parties. The allegations of vote buying and manipulation have cast a shadow over the democratic process, leaving citizens questioning the integrity of their elected officials.
