Some months back, I was teaching my Students about the National pledge and National Anthem. More than the words and lyrics.

I wanted them to truly understand what it meant. So I decided to give them an assignment to first find out for themselves what a pledge means and it’s synonyms.

So when they came back with synonyms like Oath, promise, word of honor, vow. I nodded, these children have entered my trap honestly.

Thank God most of them were lovers of the Nigeria home movies unlike me, Nigerian Movie directors have done justice to show us what an oath looks like especially when taken in front of a shrine, whether it’s a blood convenant, relationship oath, ritual oath or even the oath of innocence against a murder of one’s friend or spouse.

They were all smiling as I brought back memories of certain movies. (Oh I wish they knew what was coming) so I asked them to recite the Pledge again

I PLEDGE to Nigeria my country
To be Faithful, loyal and Honest
To serve Nigeria with ALL MY STRENGTH
TO DEFEND HER UNITY, and UPHOLD HER HONOUR AND GLORY
SO HELP ME GOD.

I told them there is your oath to defend Nigeria’s unity, honor and glory and you know the worst part Children? You added God into the oath.

You recite this every morning right, you promise over and over again in God’s sight to do this very thing yet you want Biafra to come, you want to travel to Canada, you rig elections, you deny your fellow citizens the basic amenities they deserve, you pay security men to put you in front of the line, you scam other nations in the name of slavery.

You should have some shame or be man enough to stop RECITING THE NATIONAL PLEDGE AND SO HELP YOU GOD

Then the Class became Silent.

I knew that Knowledge would stick with them for a very long time. (My work is done here)
