On the 11th of October, Ogbanago Muhammed Ibrahim got a National Honours Award from President Muhammadu Buhari at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

This gesture has been traced back to 2016, when Ogbanago Muhammed Ibrahim, a graduate of Kogi State College Of Education was an employee at Technocrime security company but was posted to work as a gate man in one of UBA’s branches in Lagos, Oba Akran Ikeja branch.

He had stumbled across a huge sum of money, $10,000 which was worth N3.5M in Nigerian currency, yet he took the money to the branch manager, Funmi Ojuile, who was filled with surprise and ultimately returned it to the customer who lost it.

A customer had come to withdraw money for a company he worked for and forgot part of the sum he withdrew.

The customer narrated how he would have been thrown into kirikiri prison had he not seen the money and how his children in the university would have suffered because of the money.

The customer was filled with thanks and happiness, he even went as far as prostrating to show his gratitude to Ogbanugo Muhammed Ibrahim.

Also, at the time of this incident, Ibrahim earned N30,000 monthly as his salary. It would have taken him 10 years to earn $10,000, but still he returned the money.

This occurrence seems almost impossible seeing how difficult life has become and how everyone will want to earn an extra penny to support themselves and their family.

Judging the circumstances surrounding Ibrahim, 29 years old and a graduate of NCE who was working as a gate man while squatting with his brothers, who lived at Oshodi and Egbeda respectively.

It would have been easy to steal the money for himself, but still, he didn’t let the ugly state of the country and his life influence his integrity.

As a reward for this sincerity and honesty, he got a lot of privileges for indeed upholding that “A good name is better than silver and gold”.

One of the benefits of his honesty was getting an invitation from the chairman of UBA, Tony Elumelu to meet the board and eventually addressed the board.

Muhammed Ibrahim has been getting constant opportunities for his honesty.
He got cash donations from dignitaries of Nigeria and even got a commendation letter from Technocrime security.

At this present time, President Muhammadu Buhari found Ibrahim amongst 437 nominees worthy of the National Honour Awards.

Six years later and he is still getting appreciated for his honesty.

Does this not show that honesty is indeed a virtue?
