HOW TO OVERCOME STRESS AT WORK

Job stress can be defined as the harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of the job do not match the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker.

The life of an average Nigerian worker is sometimes filled with stress at work, most times Lagos workers find their way to their houses as late at 9pm to 10pm

Only to rush to work as early as 4am or 5am to beat the terrible morning traffic.

For some workers who reside in Lagos, this is just the start of work stress, many times this stress makes employees to dread Mondays and thank God for Fridays hence the beautiful slogan, “Thank God it’s Friday”

There may be signs of stress in a team, like:
arguments.
higher staff turnover.
more reports of stress.
more sickness absence.
decreased performance.
more complaints and grievances.

There are many reasons for stress at work, the first is Long hours

Long hours at work can be mentally draining, especially when there are no breaks, it is even more stressful when the work isn’t one that you’re passionate about, most employers should give time for breaks or if possible reduce the hours people spend at work.

2. Heavy Overload

Most times workers are given more than they can handle, as a worker your job description should be spelt out for you, this makes it easy for the employee to know what to focus on and things that he should prioritize.

Most employees do not know that there are specific tasks that are their job description and it shouldn’t be delegated to other people.

3. Changes within the organization

When changes are brought into an organization, it brings about stress especially when there are changes in the duties meant to be carried out, when one who is meant to be in the accounting department leaves their department and is transferred to the customer service department, it would make the employee to start learning new skills, new tasks, reporting to new bosses and it takes time for an average human being to readjust to something that they were not already used to.

4. Challenges

Most times emotional challenges can be draining, probably from family or from a relationship with a fiance, or spouse.

We are largely emotional beings and there are times when we are overwhelmed with the situations we find ourselves, from quarrels and misunderstanding between colleagues most times or with our senior staff, supervisors and managers.

5. Insufficient training

Employees who aren’t trained sufficiently sometimes feel stressed most of the time, adequate training allows for skills and the mindset to overcome certain challenges that the employee would overcome.

Certain tasks that would take one more days can easily be solved and delivered within few hours under the proper hands and professional.

This is the reason why most companies train to their recruits before they start working with them.

Soon I’ll be discussing how to reduce stress at the work place
